Has anyone on pregnisone or another steriod had positive results? I had a dexamethasone suppression test, and my doctor thinks my high testosterone levels are coming from an adrenal problem. I'm IR as well and have been getting regular periods since I changed my diet to lower carbs. He's suggested adding a low dose of pregnisone, but I'm worried about side effects of long term steriod use. Any personal stories or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance. This forum has taught me so much
My grandfather takes that because of Emphysema. (He came down with it even though he had quit smoking 30 years before.) His biggest problem with it is bone loss. He has severe Osteoporosis. He is now on a med. for that which is helping greatly. If you go on itlong term, you may want to do bone denisty screening once a year at least.

I've been on Prednisolone for just over a year. When I first started it, I did lose about 7 pounds, now I do feel some better on it.

...but does anyone else have any steriod experiences? I had thought that the adrenal problem was unrelated to my IR, but from what I've been reading it's possible that the extra insulin may have an affect on the adrenal gland as well. Anybody else have any adrenal stories out there? And thanks MaLee and Eva for your responses!
Hi,
I'm a nurse and whenever we put a patient on steriods we have to be careful to check their blood sugars. Sometimes steriods can cause high blood sugars even in people without diabetes. But this is more common with high dosages or long term use. I'm not sure if being IR would factor into all this or not. Might be worth asking your doctor about.
We also tell patients to be careful not to just stop taking steroids (unless your doctor says to). Usually they try to wean patients off of the steroids over a period of time.
One of my co-workers also tells me (from personal experience) that prednisone can hurt your stomach but it's ok if you take it with food.
Hope this helps!
Molly

My mother has taken so much of it over the past 13 years its unbelievable! She is a Chronic Asthmatic and basically for that time has nearly lived on it.
And boy has it done some damage!!!! She now has steriod induced Diabetes, which makes no difference how much sugar she eats, as soon as she takes a predisone tablet bang her sugars go out of control. She also has no immune system due to the breakdown from all of the predisone. She has osteoporosis and has to have a bone density test every year to see if how she is going, also she is unable to take tablets for the osteo because the predisone has given her ulcers and a hiatus hernia.
She also went from roughly 60kgs to over 120kgs, doubled in size within 6 months of taking this horrible drug. She also has elivated heart rate when taking it.
It does the job but heck it also does a whole lot of damage in the process!!!!!
Also if you are going to be taking it make sure they check out your blood sugars regularly!!! No one checked mum's at all and then one day she slipped into a coma for about 9 hours and they just thought she was sleeping, if it wasn't for a nurse who had seen something like this before, she would never have had her sugars checked and wouldn't be here now, so please I stress make sure they monitor you with EVERYTHING!!!
I was on Decadron (or dexamethasone with is another steroid, much stronger than prednisone but that does not affect the blood sugar), it blocks, at small dose, part of the steroids coming from your adrenal glands that eventually, transfroms into DHEA---)Androstenedione---)Testosterone ---) Oestradiol. This eventually brings down your levels of male hormones and oestrogen that are usually too high in PCOS. That is why your doctor wants to give it to you. It help me for a while. If you have 17-OH-progesterone deficiency, you are definitely a candidate for prednisone or another steroid.
Usually, woman that have PCOS and 17-OH progesterone deficiency are thin but have all the other symptoms of PCOS and respond very well to very small dose of cortisone. (prednisone, decadron...)
Good luck
