Default extended clomid cycle?

Has anybody ever been put on an "extended clomid" cycle? I took 100 mg clomid cd 5-9 at the beginning of this cycle, my first time on the drug. I didn't o by CD 18. The RE has put me back on 100 mg of clomid (without inducing a period first). I'm taking it for six days, then going in for blood testing for estriadol levels, which will determine whether it's worth doing an u/s yet or not. If I'm developing follicles, the clomid gets stopped, if not, I keep taking clomid.

I haven't seen a single post about this -- has anybody ever done it?

I've got classic "string of pearl" polycystic ovaries according to ultrasounds. All my labs show normal levels (though there is an inverse LH:FSH level) and my fasting tests came back normal (one was even low). I've asked about metformin, and the RE is willing to prescribe it, but doesn't think it will help me.

I lack lots of the other typical signs of PCOS, too. I'm 5'2", and on my recent low-carbish diet have dropped from 110-112 lbs to 107. Some acne (which has cleared up since low carbing) and some hair but nothing extreme.
