I have been making an effort to gain weight, as I am a thin cyster and met made me lose half a stone. Unfortunately it has all gone on my tummy, so between that and being bloated most of the time, I look pregnant. Colleagues have started asking me if I am and it's really getting me down. I mean, nobody wants to look pregnant when they aren't, but it's even worse when I so desperately want to be.

Anyone else with the same problem, anything I can do other than wear baggy clothes? Lol

I have been reading posts about ladies struggling with metformin - I remember those days.

Hopefully this advice will help.... if possible - see if you can have Glumetza instead.

Glumetza IS metformin, however, it is absorbed differently. Years and years ago I was on metformin and then metformin XR and it did nothing for me except make me miserable. I was sick to my stomach for hours after taking it and it didn't matter how I took it or with what. I gained a lot of weight. It did nothing for my hormones. When I met my RE he suggested trying glumetza but it is considered a "tier 3" drug which means your doctor is going to have to help you get it through your insurance. We basically had to prove I NEEDED it. It's also expensive - luckily, my RE gives me a discount card and I have great insurance so I only spend $35 for a 90 day supply. However, 90days is $1800 without insurance.

I very rarely have tummy issues on this medication. In fact, the only time I've had issues with it is if I've been bad and had something like soda or fried food (the fun of living in Amish Country) and even then the "punishment" is no where near as bad as it was on metformin.

Glumetza is what helped me get my body working and eventually my son. Just my two cents. Good luck, ladies!

The first day I skipped my dose since I couldn't eat. I've taken it the past two days though. Today I'm having numbness and tingling in my arms. I'm wondering if it is because I'm not able to eat very much (just some rice and mashed potato). Has anyone had side effects crop up suddenly when they were ill or unable to eat?

I did call my NP, she's not in today. The doctor that shares the office with her is supposed to return my call but hasn't so far. I just thought I'd see if anyone else had this issue while I'm waiting.

Hi everyone, this is my first post since trying to conceive no.2, just to give a little bit of background I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 2010 when I came of the bcp trying to conceive No.1. I had no af for 7 months until a saw a gyno who prescribed provera to induce af. I then had no ovulation with the help of clomid so moved onto injectables alongside metformin and after two cycles was very happy to fall pregnant. This time I have prepared myself for the long emotional journey and started a low gi diet 2 months before coming off birth control, I have also changed dctrs recently and my new doctor started me on metformin straight away which I was very pleased with as I had heard good things about it working for woman with 'lean' pcos like myself. The first month taking metformin I had spotting for 3 days on cycle day 24 but blood test showed no ovulation had occurred, this month I have not had any of the usual pain I suffer from (caused by body trying to ovulate with little success) but spotting has now started on cycle day 19. Is this a good sign that my body is starting to work? Do I go for a blood test of cycle day 21 as planned or is that pointless? Any help will be appreciated as feeling very confused at the moment.

I was diagnosed with PCOS after constant bleeding for a few months. It wasn't a period as I never cramped and don't think I ovulated for at least a year. Anyway the dr gave me norethisterone in nov and after only a day the bleeding stopped. I had a period at the start of nov when the norethisterone had finished. It was the same duration as my old periods that I uses to get, but more cramping and heavier.

a couple of months later I finally seen a gynaecologist who diagnosed me and prescribed metformin. After 3 weeks I got some slight spotting that lasted for 2 weeks. Followed by what felt like it could have been ovulation (tender breast / slight cramp), then 2
weeks later I got what i think is a period. Except the bleeding is really heavy and cramp really sore. Every time I stand up I can feel what I can only describe as a flood. And its been waking me at night. On Monday night I had to change pads 3 times in 6 hours. Tuesday night wasn't so bad

Does this sound like the metformin, and do you think the bleeding will not be abnormally long. It's only been 3 days, but I'm off on holiday next week and really hoping its stopped by then.

does metformin restore cycles, and is the first period a really heavy one?

sorru that was a total ramble. Hope it made sense.

I wanted to start a thread to see if there are any other unique cysters out there like me. All of us are unique and PCOS is such an individualized issue. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another person. But I have had a really hard time finding anyone else out there with the same "uniqueness" as myself. A little about myself....I'm a type 1 Diabetic (diagnosed at age 16). I use an insulin pump and am completely insulin dependent. I am also hypothyroid and on Levothyroxine. I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 20 (symptoms since puberty). I am a thin/average cyster being 130lbs and 5' 4''. My last AF was in July 2008. Since then, I have been on BCP for a total of 12 months, and used Prometrium (I think) while not on BCP. My TTC journey thus far has not been too terribly hard. DH and I tried for 8 months with no luck before turning to Clomid. I didn't respond to 50mg or 100mg but did to 150mg. I conceived DS on our 2nd cycle of 150mgs. So in all, it was about 12 months til my BFP. Since DS was born last June, I have not had AF at all. I have almost completely weaned DS from nursing (will be done this week). While at a routine visit with my Endo for my diabetes, she recommended that I try Metformin to see if that helps my PCOS symptoms. Since I am already insulin dependent, I wasn't aware that Met was even a possibility for me...but I guess it is. So now I am working my way up to 2000mg and watching for the normal side effects and the possible side effects unique to me (lowered blood sugar levels). So far I haven't had any issues but I'm still only on 500mgs. Anyway....I just wanted to see if there are any other women out there like myself, dealing with both the issues of PCOS and the difficulties that Diabetes brings to TTC, maintaining normal cycles, and Pregnancy; and I would especially like to see how Metformin affects those of us that are already insulin dependent.

My story began in 2002, I had met my ex husband then in 1999, So in 2002 we started ttc on our own. And nothing so after a yr of ttc we went to my obgyn to see if she could help, So she did test and thats when i found out I had PCOS and it wouldnt be easy to get pregnant. Plus I had never had a reg af ever, Dr put me on metformin I didnt like it, it hurt my tummy and made me sick alot. so i stopped taking it, Anyway Me and my ex husband split. Then I found My Hubby now in 2006. We started right away ttc he wanted kids as much as me. So i went back to obgyn n she sent me to an RE, He then put me on Metformin again n Birth control pills I did that for 3 months started my af regular and stopped takin b/c pills. Then in oct 08 my re wanted to try clomid so I did 3 rnds of it and got pregnant my 3rd cycle, Sadly m/c @ 6 wks. Then He wanted to try femara I did 3 rnd o'd perfectly every time on time but still no baby. So then he added gonal-f and ovidril still months after months nothing. So in march 2012 still takin metformin, i told my hubby i gotta stop TTC its driving me crazy, @ this time ive done gave up i thought i would never have my OWN baby, Ive took care of so many others kids I was dying for my own. I mean it was my life long dream to have a baby thats all I ever wanted. One morning i woke up n my dog was acting funny, she wouldnt let no one near me and i'd been sleepy n my boobs hurt n didnt wanna eat anything. So i was like ok ima take a preg test, ive already took so many and all- one more - wont hurt, so i took one and it was 2 yrs old BFP in sec, I was like no way So i took 2 more old preg test all +. So my hubby was like lets go get a good one, We got EPT, clearblue just to be sure I took everyone I was in so much shock. I couldnt believe it I had FINALLY got my BFP. When I got pregnant i weight 326 by the time I was in my 3rd trim I was down to 280. In the first trim I was so sick I'd throw up as soon as my feet touched the floor. Everything smelled so nasty. Then in second trim it got so much better, Sec trim is Heaven. 3rd trim i was ready for my baby, if something on me could hurt on my body it did. I just want every woman to know if I can do it U can to. I have took sooo much meds n soo many ovulation test n so many pregnancy test and it hurts so bad when U see all these other women just pop pregnant and act like its nothing to them, N ur just sitting there n ud gave ur life to be pregnant. I use to dream what it would be like to hold my baby. And girls i tell U theres nothing like it in the whole world, One more thing My Re done test on me to see why i had a m/c n really couldnt came up with nothing, The only thing was Im not diabetic but am inslin res, With PCOS everyone is, He said havin PCOS is borader line diabetic anyways, So when I got pregnant the sec time I did a low carb thing, I ate bread just wheat nothing white n no sugar. My Re said he thinks thats what keep me pregnant this time. Oh And through out my whole pregnancy I never had high blood pressure n didnt get gestion diabetes. I wish ALL U ladies ttc TONS & TONS of baby dust, I'm praying for U all. Dont ever give up no matter how big u are or how small,

Currently I am taking 2000mg time released at night before I go to bed. I do this for the same reason others do....bathroom issues. This seems to be working pretty well. I went from not getting my period to getting it about every 45 days or so. I wonder if it would work better if I took 100 mg during the day and 1000mg at night with dinner??

Does anyone have some insight?

Hey everyone, not posted for a while, moved over to Australia for a year in March. Hope everything is going well for you all. I just had a few questions I can't seem to find any straight answers for on Google. Thought I'd put it out here. I know everyone is different, but I started taking Metformin ER regularly on 1st October 2012. I started on 500mg a day, then went up to 1000mg a day, and gradually went up to 1500mg which I've been on now since at least Jan/perhaps early Feb. I read that it takes metformin anywhere up to 6 months to start regulating stuff out..is that 6 months on it in general or 6 months on 1500mg, which I've read is the minimum effective dose?

I've stuck with the metformin religiously, I've recently quit smoking and since October 2012 I've lost around 45lb. I feel fantastic compared to before I started on the met..I wouldn't stop for anything now, the difference in me is just...I still can't believe it. But should I be expecting AF to turn up soon? Or should I be concerned I've not seen it already? I've had some weird cramps recently and (TMI) quite a bit of discharge.. My last AF was over a year ago. I asked my GP about Provera etc, he said he didn't want to risk it because of the weight and the smoking etc. I know I've lost weight and stopped smoking now, but I'm in Australia, and not sure of how things like that would work here, but I'm going to need to see a doctor here soon anyway, as I'll need a new prescription for the met.

Any thoughts? :)
