So far I've had most of the side effects from Metformin at least once since I started taking it last week. I spoke with my doctor a few days ago since I was experiencing severe cramping, bloating and gas and she's having me take a half a pill twice a day. Yesterday I was doing well with this, but today I'm light-headed and nauseous. I'm wondering if this is normal? Has anyone else felt this way? I don't want to call my doctor yet again only to be told, yet again, that these symptoms are typical. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :goodvibes

Hi Ladies,

I noticed a lot of you out there a skeptical to start Metformin. I just wanted to share my experience with this medication so you can hear about it's amazing potential. I am a thin cyster 5'7 135lbs, I do not have any history of insulin resistance. However, my Dr. gave me the option to start Metformin and it was the best decision I ever made. I am only taking 1000mg of regular daily (500mg twice per day).

It has been a rough 3 months. I have had every side effect in the book: nausea, vomiting, emotional roller coaster, diarrhea, constipation, you name it I had it! Just recently have the side effects started to subside.

On a positive note. My testosterone dropped from 112 to 70 and yesterday AF showed up 100% natural (no provera needed)! I can't say that I am prego yet, but I feel very positive about the progress my body is making. If you are having any doubts about Metformin, I would definitely encourage everyone to give it a try!

My DH has caught me spacing off while trying to cook noodles on the stove...needless to say they were way to overdone!!!! has anyone else been in a fog or forgetting while on Met? I really need to know if this is a side effect or not. I will be calling Endocrinologist today but am super curious to find out soon. Thanks for all the help.

I've gained five pound since starting metformin. I took the advice of taking the met with food to a whole other level:( I'm taking met to try and prevent a M/c and hoping to respond better to clomid in January. I lost 45 pounds without it. My RE wasn't big on giving it to me in the first place and thought losing more weight would be a better way to go. I wanted to do both to kind of cover everything. Well here I am gaining instead of losing and using the take with food excuse to eat more than I should. How do you do both? Help! I caught in the middle here.

Hi, I was dx with PCOS in December of 2006 and early the next year with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. For a while I was on 1500 daily of Metformin and that worked well, but still wasn't controlling my AF. Then, I was taken off the Metformin & put on a small dose of levothyroxine and yaz. I love the yaz because it has totally regulated my AF, but the levothryoxine doesn't feel like it's helping. All of my blood tests say it is, but I still feel sluggish and "blah" all the time. Is it possible to be on Metformin and BCP? Or possible Levothyroxine, Metformin, and BCP? Or would that just be pointless. Maybe I'm confused about what all of these do but I was just curious. I'm going to my endo in a month and I just wanted to be ready with questions or perhaps asking her about different meds. Thanks guys!!

If this doesn't belong in this thread I'm sorry!

Hey ladies. Here's a recient study on high risk for diabetes (not pcos women) that looks at alcohol and conversion from high risk of developing diabetes to becoming diabetic. They found that moderate drinkers 1-3 drinks a day and never more than 7 drinks (binge) in a day actually decreased the risk of becoming diabetic. This is the only study that I've been able to find that looks at moderate drinking in people on met. As long as we stay within "moderate" and don't drink more than 7-21 drinks a week, we should be actually lowering our Insulin resistance. Whoohoo

Any one have hormonal overload after starting Metformin?

I just started metformin a little over a week ago. I started out slow with only half a 500mg pill. I'm up to the whole pill now and going to start taking that X2... in the next couple days. I've had very few side effects as far as the stomach issues go. So glad for that :hail: However the hormones are going crazy only a week into the meds. I think I'm due for AF (CD 35) ..shes irregular so who knows. This cycle was my first cycle after a provera cycle that was crazy heavy. When I took the provera I didn't really have any signs AF was coming...just spotting then once she was here heavy cramping and bleeding. The start of this cycle I was bit crampy ..thankfully it was only 6 days long :) Now I'm thinking AF must be nearing again but since taking the metformin my boobs are killing me, I wake up hot and I feel this on and off cramping/pinching. I'm glad the metformin is waking up all these hormones but is this going to happen every cycle? Does your body start to adjust to everything after awhile? Before the provera my cycles came and went with little PMS at all. I had to take the provera because an u/s showed a thick lining..that is the reason for the heavy cramping and bleeding. The lining can't still be thick after having another cycle after the provera. Anyone else start metformin and have all these hormones wake up all at once? It's like they all were sleeping and the metformin woke them all up. I'm not even on my full dose yet. I have 1000mg to go! Is this a good sign that metformin should help regulate everything ? I'm not sure if I should go up to the full dose. Tell me has this happened to anyone else?????

I've been taking this almost a week 750x1 time a day with dinner. Next week it'll be 720x2 a day. Does this sound familiar to others? First time felt warm fuzzy. I've been peeing like crazy. I now have 1 chin. My mid-circle looks smaller? Does it remove excess water? Anyone?
I'm able to think in my head, ya like able to plan stuff, I haven't been able to think in over 4 years! Seems like it's getting better every day. (O- another thing(maybe the medication), I'm realizing my family relays to much on me and are whinny? Example instead of them doing it themselves, they call me ever single time on SIMPLE stuff (I'm catching on lol).

Hi everyone. I've read a lot of the boards here and am trying to figure out what the best path for me would be in regards to Metformin. My doctor and I have determined that I am IR as well as PCOS. Since I'm not trying to get pregnant, she has put me on NuvaRing to regulate periods and prevent cysts from forming. She suggested that I avoid all white foods and that, plus regular exercise, should help with my weight problem (I'm 214 and 5ft4). She said that if the diet does not start to work soon, I should go on Metformin to help lose the weight. I've been following a low GI diet for about 4 weeks now with exercise and I've yet to lose any weight (haven't gained any either--yay). Should I request the Metformin or wait for a longer period of time for the diet to work?
