Hello. I have a 13 year old daughter with possible PCOS. I had a hard time finding a GYN to accept a 13y/o who is not pregnant. She had been diagnosed as prehypertensive by her pediatrician. I brought to his attention that I was concerned about her heavy, painful, long periods. He sent her for a renal ultrasound and added the pelvis just because. Kidneys normal, however multiple ovarian cysts. Next step had to find GYN willing to treat (risk) minor patient. I explained every symptom: High b/p, severe acne, facial hair:lip and chin, ultrasound, irregular and painful cycles. Labs were ordered. Before I left she told me that it sounds like puberty and best bet to start birth control pill for better control. Labs came back testos. 66 HIGH and the LH/FSH within the range of PCOS......but still no diagnosis. I took my daughter to the E.R. about a month later for severe pain and heavy bleeding, high b/p and SOB. The NP ask me if I had ever heard of PCOS, I then explained everything that I had gone through and she tell me that my daughter has this diagnosis written all over. NP tells me if she could prescribe the GLUCO???? she would, however it must be monitored. My point to all of this is why would PCOS be a diagnosis a OBGYN would not want to give? Is there something horrible that I am not being told or reading about? PLEASE fill me in. FYI I will have to drive my daughter about an hour and a half away to a Children Hospital for a Pediatric GYN.I will and I have no problem doing it, but why?
