Unhappy extreme cramping-not normal for me

So about a year ago exactly I was put on birht control that pretty much made me bleed HEAVILY for three weeks straight before the gynocologist took me off of it. Even before the birht control I would get my period about once a year. Yesterday I got extreme cramping and a horrible pain in my lower back, something I have never experience before getting my period.
I started my period, later in the day, but the pain is putting me close to tears. And to top it off, the bleeding is very heavy, which is unusual for me when I first start. I tried using a tampon, but it was painful, so I had to take it out. And lastly, it seems that there are chunks..or i dont know, something other than blood. I'm really worried about it. any ideas, suggestions?

I have had a couple of periods like that. I was not on bcp at the time. The pain was so intense, I couldn't walk, I was nauseous and I thought I was going to pass out. I bled heavily. I was filling a super tampon and a super pad in less than 30 min and it went on for hours like that. I basically couldnt leave the house. Like I said, that has only happened a couple of times and it was in my late teens. Being put on a bcp with the right horomone dose helped tremendously. There are some pills that simply do not have enough hormones in them and will cause me to bleed daily (not heavily though).

If you are still having major bleeding and cramping that wont stop, you will probably need to go to the Dr. There are things they can do to make the bleeding stop. Sounds like the "chunks" are probably blood clots. You might be able to manage the pain with Advil or Aleve. Try to stay calm and manage it until you can get to the Dr. If it gets worse, I might would go to the ER.

Let us know how things turn out!!
