Default Failed Oral Glucose Test

At then end of February I had an oral glucose test done and I failed it. First, the doctor ordered more of the syrup than they usually give for a 1 hr test so I don't know if that messed up the results. I will be seeing an endocrinologist at the end of April. Right now I am trying to read up as much as possible and just trying to not be freaked out by this all. My emotions are bouncing all over the place. I have cut out all sugary drinks, and have cut back on high starchy stuff like white bread and potatoes. I just feel lost right now and one day I'll be fine and the next day I'll be freaking out about what this all might mean.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Diabetes diagnosis is a scary thing and if in fact you have it give yourself time to accept it. It's okay to be sad and scared and angry. Thats normal. I went through a myriad of emotions myself and eventually acceptance of what it is.

You've got a great start going cutting out white sugars and sugar soda! Eventually you wont miss it. Trust me, I was the biggest Dorito, gummy bear and Pepsi addict out there.

Did your doctor give you a fasting glucose blood test? Are you testing your blood sugars at home?

They had to test my fasting numbers before the lab would give me the syrup. I just happened to look down at the machine when they did it and the fasting number was 93. I think I remember my dad (who has diabetes) saying 80-100 for fasting. Right now I'm just angry and sad at myself. Maybe if I had eaten better this wouldn't be happening etc? I'll get there but right now I'm just scared about possibly being diabetic.

No one around me understands. I am so upset at myself like i could have prevented it all by eating better and taking better care of myself instead of putting everyone ahead of me!
Im here if you want to vent!

Thanks. I love to cook and my brain went into the mode that I wouldn't be able to cook what I want so I a focusing on looking up recipes that I can cook and enjoy and all that. As long as I have something to focus on I'm okay. It's in the moments that I am not busy that I get really down.

Don't beat yourself up thinking you could have prevented it by eating better. Our metabolisms are mostly genetic, and your Dad had it. Perhaps you could have delayed it but odds are that eventually it would show up. Lots of people can control type II diabetes with their diet. Fasting glucose below 93 says your pancreas is still working well enough to get your glucose down. Maybe it just doesn't work as fast as a normal person. You could be Insulin Resistant and not Type II. The endo will probably give you an A1C test which will tell them how your glucose has been acting over time. Cutting out sugary drinks and high glycemic food might make a big difference for you. Keep us posted.

P.S. My grandmother, Dad and uncle had it. Dad was diagnosed at 55 and my uncle around age 50. Gives me something to look forward to. Ha!
