Default Family Adoption

My cousin has asked me to adopt her almost two year old son! I'm wondering if anyone has experience in family adoptions. I have the papers, and we don't have three grand to drop on a lawyer so we have to do everything ourself. Is this the same as a regular adoption?

It depends on the state you live in. I know that in Texas you have to have a homestudy done no matter what....which is about $1500...but in other states you can just submit the paperwork. The court clerk should be able to tell you.

In our state you also have to have a home study completed to make sure the child will have a room, and to see the environment the child will be raised in. Good Luck I hope everything works out for the best for everyone involved

I just wanted to add, as I'm sure you know, but just incase Please make sure her parental rights are terminated. There have been a crop up of a bunch of cases of family or friends being promised to raise a child and years later the parent jumping back in and legally being able to do so.

I am so happy you are going to be able to adopt. There are some volunteer groups that maybe able to help you with some of the legal stuff. I would ask around your area to find out where.
