Wink Met killing me

Hello,

Im new to the forum and I have some problems with Metformin. I started taking it on October 9th it was supposed to be twice a day 500mg each and I've gotten so sick from it its incredible. I took it once in the morning and once at night but I had to stop the morning dosage. It was making me go to the bathroom all day long and making me dizzy. I wanted to throw-up and go to sleep. Now Im taking it at night before bedtime but in the middle of the night Im waking up to go to the bathroom.

I was on clomid about 3 yrs ago and it didn't work. I see on the board that the symtoms get better but it hasn't for me. Am I taking this right? Has anyone else had this problem?? Im a smoker also, I know this is bad for my health but is this making me sick as well? Please help!! Im trying my best to have a baby but no luck. Im 5'6 and 220lbs. with hiritusm all over and its very uncomfortable.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Sorry you're having a rough time, Sarah. There's hope. I was stubborn and refused to change my diet for my first yr on met, and I suffered greatly for it. When I started moderating my carbs, I found a HUGE difference in how I felt and my hormone bloodwork improved so much after that time too. Increasing my exercise helped too, because exercise decreases your insulin.

The dizziness is likely hypoglycemia, and that means you are not taking in enough calories on the metformin. You need to give your body some more calories for your insulin to work on, so I'd try to eat small, high protein snacks to keep your blood sugar up. You'll feel so much better.

Hope it helps and all the best!

It depends on the person, but yes. Some ladies can see results at 500 mg others have stubborn enough hormones that a higher dose is in order. Generally if labs aren't moving within a trial period, they attempt a dosage increase up to the daily maximum of 2250 mg.

Hope it helps.

I am just starting to learn about PCOS and in doing my research about continuing met during pregnancy have found that it is a category B drug... not C, as listed above. Here is a link that I was given about medications in pregnancy:

http://www.perinatology.com/exposure....htm#Metformin

Thanks.

I just read above on the inciid link that metformin is considered a class C drug during pregnancy. but I have found several links that say it's a class B drug. how do I know? is it possible that it's been upgraded?

*edit* I see the person above me had the same comment LOL

Smile New to PCOS and Met....

I posted this in the wrong spot the first time....OOPS!

Hello all! I am really enjoying all the information I am acquiring from this site. After 7 years of ttc baby # 2 and being told by my doc that I just needed to "relax", I switched doctors. I went and visited my new ob/gyn(who is female) on Jan 5,2004. After 15 mins, she looked at me and said, "you look like you have PCOS." I was shocked! I am the text book PCOSer. I gain all my weight in my middle, have excessively hairy arms, face, etc...... acne and oily skin. After tests and an Ultrasound, her diagnosis was confirmed. I have been doing a low carb/low sugar diet For 2 and a half weeks and have dropped 10lbs!!!! I started Met today. Even at just 500mg, I am having an upset tummy. Will it get worse when I up my dosage?

Christy
I just started on Met yesterday and wanted to say thank you for the information. I found it to be so helpful and I'm sure many new users of Met will say the same. Thank you once again.

Hi Christy,

Thank you so much for your time and effort in explaining Metformin. I am so grateful. I have just booked an appointment to see my Doctor and I am going to ask to try it to balance out my high testoterone levels to help my irregular periods, acne and hirsutism.

Thanks again!

Emma

Thanks for posting! This is all very good info. I to have terrible side effects from Met., I am requesting that my doctor start me on glucophage XR. Hopefully this will work out better if my Doc. agrees to it.

Has anyone switched from Met to glucophage XR? If so, what were your symptoms on Met. and than the improved results for Glu. XR? Thanks for any replies.
