I took metformin (2500mg) before I got pregnant and throughout my ENTIRE pregnancy and my daughter is absolutely perfect. I'm even breastfeeding and continuing to take my met. Met is a wonder-drug for many of us. Good luck to you!!

I actually asked him if I could increase to 1000mg/day and he agreed. Could he have started me on 500mg a day because my hormones were not far from normal? |

I'd contact his office and find out what his philosophy is long term and his reasons so you're both on the same page. It's good to know what the plan is (and why!).

My Mood: Points: 4,382.09 Bank: 31,303.48 Total Points: 35,685.56 | Metformin dosage The problem is I'm an RN and have researched metformin extensively. His initial statement was, "Now remember, this drug will not prevent pregnancy." I was aghast, because that is the whole reason I've have been through the whole gammut the past 4 months (I desperately want to get pg), but at that particular time could not think of what to say and just walked out with my RX. I did call to ask "permission" if you will, if I could start a higher dose and the nurse called me back and he approved. I've had a really hard time dealing because I'm an RN and I'm very impatient, knowledge is not necessarily power when you're the patient.

| I hear ya'. Years of being a patient and dealing with MD's on that side of the desk has made me pretty picky...I write down q's and don't leave my GP's office until he has answered tham all to my liking. I am the kind of person who needs to know WHY I have a certain course of treatment not just the HOW's, KWIM?
Many women whose hormones are close to normal or move really easily can do really well on a lower dose. Others like me need a jackhammer. If you know your labwork results you might be answer your own Question re: how close to normal your labs really were.
Good luck on the met, Kara!

Therefore, I was unprepared for the Q&A session. Good idea about the lab work, I believe I will request that and use the resources that are at my disposal any time I want!!
Thanks for the uplifting comments

I've been on MET for as long as I can remember, but I was always curious: Is there a difference if you take Metformin with food opposed to taking it without food? I haven't been taking it with food, and I was wondering if it would effect anything in general. |

I find taking it with even a glass of milk makes all the difference!
Hope it helps!

My body started to go through so many changes I didn't know what the heck was going on. I found your post to be very informative. I can't thank you enough.

I just started up on met again for the second time (i took it 4yrs ago) and i had a horrible time on it, so this time i decided to take it at night to sleep thru the side effects. Is there anything bad with taking it at night?
