I'm new to the board although I've been reading all of your messages/posts for about 2 years! For a long time I felt like I was the only gal in the world with PCOS! I'm happy to see that there are others that have dealt with the issue successfully. There are so many people that are unknowledgeable as well as insensitive towards the syndrome and it's horrible symptoms; especially the cosmetic issues.
Well, I would like to express the most difficult issue that I have experienced with PCOS. It's difficult to find clothing because of the hair in the wrong places! All of the designers feel that a plunging neck line is a must have; this is a big problem for me as it puts limitations on my choices. Seeing beautiful dresses, and tops only remind me of why I am unable to wear them; because of PCOS...I have to be highly selective in hopes that there's a top with a higher neckline, or something that I can adjust in order to cover the area. There's no beach, bathing suits or summer fun for me...I've always dreaded the summer because of this. It's a difficult and depressing road...no dating either unless I prepare in advance.
I've had unsuccessful laser on the face although I have normal testoterone levels according to my PCP. The laser treatments started off rather well, but then the place went under new management and the quality of service went with it. I've since tried 2 other places and I was severely burned and had to stay home for about a week! All of that trauma and I still hair in the wrong places. If it didnt work on the face; I have no hope for the other areas that have yet to enjoy being fashionable!
I would also like to find a new PCP...the current doc has put me on metformin, which was somewhat successful until it made my hair begin to fall out...who wants to be bald and hairy? I have presented suugestions to her for other meds, but she wont budge, although I have no other health issues...so there we have it...would love to hear some of your thoughts on the issue.

Hi!
Just wanted to give some of my methods with dealing with the cleavage fuzzies For years, I just shaved it and that worked fairly well. A couple years ago, I purchased an epilator and that worked wonders! It did cause a little redness and irritation that went away within a day or so...all in all, it was well worth the little bit of pain--I would only have to do it every three weeks or so and over time the hair came in finer and slower. I also epilate my arms and belly.
I've been on 100 mg of spiro for the past 9 months as well as ortho cyclen and the chest hair is virtually gone (the other body and facial hair has become greatly reduced also). I've also completed my fifth round of laser on my goatee area and am seeing great results.
I've never been on met, but I too suffer from severe hair loss--before starting spiro, I was at a loss as to how to cover the balding areas. For me, the hair loss was exacerbated by iron and vitamin D deficiencies...after 9 months of spiro and nutritional supplements, I'm happy to say that my hair is now thicker and healthier--the massive shedding has gone back to normal and I have hundreds of baby hairs spiking up all over my head. I take spiro, 325 mg of ferrous gluconate (iron supp), 2000 IUs of vitamin D, vitamin B complex, fish oil, vitamin C, and 5000 mg of biotin.
I do know that met interferes with your body's ability to absorb B vitamins, which are essential for healthy hair. If you're not already taking a B-complex while on me, I would definitely start taking one.
Hope this helps and good luck!!
Does it matter how expensive the epilator is? Which brand is best?
I may purchase one from Target this week...I'll try it on the toughest hair first...sounds painful, but if one can endure the torture of bleeding and bumps for the last 15 years then a little tweezing shouldnt hurt! LOL! (I hope)
I also use the Braun Silk Epil, and love it. It is available at Ulta, or Bed Bath and Beyond. Both of those places put a 20% off coupon in the Sunday paper every few weeks. If you have those stores close to you, and you have the coupon, it's a savings of about $14. I got mine at the BBB store a while back. It was totally worth the expense.

Having hair on my face really does tricks... sometimes I feel ashamed to look at people. If I feel "stubby", I am self conscious and think that people can see it, and are looking at my face... when really they aren't... It makes me feel so unlady like... so unfeminine...
I had a better handle on it last year, but now its starting to grow out again... I have lost a lot of weight, and feel great about myself, but now this hair is blooming out like a huge tree! lol. I hate it though.
I think flexible spending and insurance should cover laser hair removal. After all, it is caused from a health problem that we have...

Hi. May I ask what brands of the supplements, specifically the Vit D and iron supplement are you taking? My doc said that I had a Vit D deficiency and a low-normal ferratin level but when I asked if that contributed to hair loss, she said no, so I figured not to bother taking anything else besides the spiro and my multivitamins. Now I starting to reconsider?

Hi,
If you do an internet search on hair loss and iron deficiency, you'll come up with a lot of articles on the subject (sorry, don't know how to post links on here!) From what I've read, the suggested feritin levels for hair maintenance is 40 and for hair growth/regrowth is 70...if you're on the low end of normal, low feritin can definitely be a contributing factor to your hair loss. Studies have shown that nutritional deficiencies are the main cause/contributing factor for most premenopausal women suffering from diffuse hair loss.
I take 2000 IUs of vitamin D..I think the brand is Natures Bounty. My fish oil supplement is also Nature's Bounty. I get it at Walgreens b/c they usually have a buy one get one free promo on this brand. The ferrous gluconate is over the counter, but I have to request it from behind the pharmacy counter b/c it's such a high dosage. I use the walgreens brand. There are lower dose iron supplements that are gentler on the system (iron supplementation can cause upset stomach and constipation). I've also heard that a good natural way to increase ferritin levels is to take a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses every day.
I do know that nutritional deficiences can definitely cause and contribute to hair loss...iron and vitamin D in particular are vital to the cell structure of hair. If you do begin a supplementation regimine, make sure you're getting your vitamin D and iron levels checked by your doctor because too much can be dangerous. I get mind checked every 6 months when I go in for my other labs.
I hope this helps--hair loss is absolutely my most devestating symptom of PCOS. I cannot tell you how much I've cried and obsessed over this...and how joyful and almost fearfully disbelieving I was the first time I noticed the baby sprouts growing on my crown.
Best of luck to you!
