My endo told me that my fasting insulin level of 11 was fine. But when I read on the internet, I see that 10-13 is mildly insulin resistant, and 9 and below is ideal. Anyone else's Dr. tell them this?
And a second question - anyone else not have any change in their fasting insulin levels after 4 months on met (1000mg)? My testosterone is lower, but fasting insulin never changed. It was at 11 before Met, and now after being on it for a while. Next time around I'll be doing the 2 hr GTT to check the insulin levels as they respond to glucose loads.
My RE told me anything 10 or under was good, but when I was researching it at the time I believe I read that a level closer to 5 is ideal. After 3 months of Met, my level was 9 but my regular endo refused to test me before starting treatment so I'll never know what it was beforehand. I do know that in those three months my symptoms of IR improved dramatically so I would assume the number would have been much higher. HTH.

my endo considers anything below 17 to be OK. i guess it all varies. you might need to up your met if it hasn't changed your insulin .. i believe 1500 is the minimum for effectiveness in most people, from what i've read.

Hey,
Try dieting and exercising along with your metformin. My fasting is fine, but by 1 hour is high. The reading is 10, and I think it should be < 7. I will discuss with my doc tomorrow if he will start metformin.
Now I'm a little worried. My fasting insulin level was 23 - thats after 2 years on 1000mg Metformin. My new doctor's just prescribed me Acomplia, is that going to help? How do I get my insulin levels down?
I got my labs done last week and my fasting glucose was ok at 89, but my fasting insulin was 37!! I'm worried with it being so high that i may already have diabetes, anyone else get readings like this?

If your insulin levels are high and your glucose levels are normal, I don't think you can be diabetic. Type II diabetes occurs when the pancreas can no longer make enough insulin to make the body use glucose at a normal pace. It sounds like your pancreas is still pumping plenty of insulin, so you aren't Type II. The problem with insulin level being so high is that excess insulin does all kinds of crazy things to the body including messing up reproductive hormones, causing hair loss, hirsutism, oily skin, high blood pressure, etc. Also, the pancreas can eventually wear out from pumping so much insulin, and that's when Type II diabetes happens.
I've only been on Metformin 2000mg for 5-6 weeks and have no change in anything...testosterone or insulin. My fasting insulin isn't my issue as much as my insulin goes up and stays up after 2 hours. I guess it's different for everyone. My doc says there should be some change...not worsening after even a short period. I guess some change is better than none. Diet really helps too. The medicine does nothing for me, but eating right seems to help.

I have looked at all the information that I could about this and I can't seem to find an answer to what it should be at before conception. I would definately keep it down under an 11 for sure.

If my insulin does not go down on Met, does that mean I'm Met-resistant? I suppose it can also mean my dose isn't high enough and/or that I haven't been using Met long enough to see a difference. I am exercising/eating well - a thin healthy PCOSer with only an insulin problem.
My periods are shorter now on Met, but still annov. My testosterone is lower on Met, so there is some progress. I've been on 1000 for 6 months now and am going to see the endo next week to see if I can be bumped up to 1500.mg and get another 2hr GTT to test insulin after a sugar load (my 2 hr insulin was 48 last time....
Is it not advisable to try to get pregnant before the Met has taken its full effect? Is it likely that I'd miscarry?
