Question Fasting levels normal, but resting levels elevated?

I had my two hour resting/fasting glucose test done on Tuesday. My doctor's nurse just called and told me that my fasting glucose levels were normal, but that my resting levels were slightly elevated. What does this mean?
I wanted to talk to my Doctor but she is out this week. I started 1500mg Met yesterday. Should I continue? Will it help me, even if my fasting levels are normal? I'm confused!!

Continue on it, but just get an appointment or phone consult to discuss your results as soon as you can....that way he can shed some light on your individual situation.

Good luck!

While Metformin is a diabetic drug, it is also used (off-label) to treat insulin resistance and pcos. In terms of diabetes, a high fasting blood sugar is often the last clinical sign of diabetes. Many people have abnormal elevations in post-prandial (post-meal) blood sugar long before they are finally diagnosed with diabetes, since the current standard for diagnosis is a high fasting blood sugar. Many experts believe that a glucose tolerance test provides more important information, and your situation is a good example of that. Sounds to me like you are on the road to diabetes, and taking Metformin may be just what you need (along with proper diet and exercise) to head it off.

One thing that could make your test results skewed is if you had been following a low-carb diet in the days prior to the test. If so, your body could have had an exaggerated blood sugar response. Just thought I should mention that in case that is the situation with you.

Did your doc also test your insulin along with your GTT, or at least get a fasting insulin test?

Actually, my Doctor called me from home yesterday. (!!!) She had called and her nurse told her that I had some questions, so she called to explain the results to me. She said that my resting glucose level was 160, which is elevated but not at a diabetic level. I wasn't doing a low-carb diet, but she recommended that I start. (Which I am, as of today!) She has me building up to 1500 mg Met a day and she said that it would definitely help me lose some weight, which is exciting. Also, she said I'm at high risk of developing gestational diabetes when we start TTC, which will be this summer, so she wants me to keep up the Met. So far so good, after 2 days I haven't been sick yet, but we'll see! Thanks for everyone's input!!
