Certain people can shove this where the sun don’t shine!
Nice.
Loving the witch hunt tone to some posts here these days. Anyone else finding this offensive? If you have an issue, take it to PM with the person you're aiming at, please.
Apparently the fat and fit versus fat not fit debate has been going on some time:
I'd assume that Harvard probably has a bit more kudos than the University of North Carolina - having done a course in postgraduate statistics/developing studies in a US university, that's my guess anyways!
We were told that in US medical research, studies can come to conclusions on a sample size as low as 6 subjects. The Harvard study cited here had an incredible 116,000 participants (not sure if that can be right?) and looked at mortality data, BMI and participants' reported amount of physical activity over 24 years. (That's some study!)
Quote:
The findings by Hu's group suggest that physical activity is healthful, but does not eliminate the increased risk of death due to obesity. At every level of physical activity, according to researchers, fatness predicted a higher risk of death.
"The evidence is compelling that both obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are strong independent risk factors for premature death," says co-author JoAnn Manson, MD, an endocrinologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "We found an excess risk of death among the overweight [and]even more among the obese."
[my emphasis]
I dunno whether the study linked to above is a longitudinal one (done over years) or has a sample size so great. Kind of doubt it.
It's fairly obvious that if someone was truly fit their body could no longer carry stones (let alone tens of stones) of extra weight. To be 'fit' in real terms, we're not talking about doing a fairly active job or walking the recommended 5 miles a day, either: you'd have to be working yourself well out of your comfort zone, consistently at which poiunt the fat would be burning away!
Anyone else remember the fat fitness trainer they had on some daytime show, once? She was convinced she was super fit because of her job but it was pretty obvious she was just doing not-too-demanding routines. There was a similar lady on 'X Weighted' recently too - who was obese but actually worked as a fitness instructor (to the amusement of their resident trainer). And when he really put her to the test of course she was puffing and panting and incapable of getting times anywhere close to those for someone of average fitness. Yet she held down a job as a trainer. When they examined her lifestyle she basically ate rubbish all day.
I think this debate will run and run in academic circles as well as here. It makes sense to get yourself as fit as you can, however you can do it in a way you enjoy and find sustainable.
LOL just reminded me worser half used to be a postie and someone once said to him *You never see a fat postman* he nearly peed himself laughing. Most of the blokes in his office were very unfit and grossly overweight/obese despite all the carrying and walking.

I don't understand why you don't get why it has come to this. It is not a witch hunt, it is about some of us getting sick of the fact that you seem to relish in the articles on obesity. Your posts on this subject seem to be totally calculated with the intention to inflame not educate. I don't for one minute believe your posts are about sharing information and healthy debate. Because many, like on the clomid thread were downright mean for the sake of it.
I do not believe any of the actual article are fat bashing by any means. It is the way the conversation always comes back to your self-righteous attitude about fat people.

I think you don't like my opinions, is all. And am afraid I'm not going to be intimidated into not having them as what I sense here is tantamount to bullying - I'm no victim though so it's a pointless exercise.
I've only seen two posters here who have been personal and offensive and I hope your posts stand so others can come to their own conclusions. You're being (understandably) defensive. I've never felt before on SC we weren't allowed opinions and as I said above, it only reflects the ongoing academic debate that people feel passionately on both sides. Take it to PM rather than cack up the threads is my suggestion as I don't think other people want this negativity. It's boring me, for one.

what a shame we can't have proper helpful discussions... I'm fast losing interest in this place.
This is my final post on the UK board. I love Soul Cysters, but am not in a place right now where I am able to deal with situations where I feel like people are being purposely malicious. I have found a place where I am accepted warts and all where I do not have to justify my weight as well as my right to have a baby.
Paddy I am sorry you feel this way. I am also sorry that I am the cause of those feelings. This should be a place of support and helpful/healthy debate. I just want you, Polly and anyone else who thinks I am a total b1itch. For a start I am one!! I am on a lot of drugs right now and my hormones are all over the place. Whether rightly or wrongly I have felt not just on this thread but other threads about weight that some people get a certain glee at being able to point out how unhealthy/lazy/irresponsible we are. My responses in the threads in question were because I felt like someone was not trying to educate but launch a personal attack on those she has decided are just plain lazy.
With that I apologise to you Polly if that is not the case. I feel no ill will towards anyone. I live a good moral life and for the most part like myself. But, at the moment I am obese and I will not apologise for that. I am 37 trying to get pregnant for the first time. My fatness is what it is and I do not have time to go away and get thin before trying for a baby. Silly me I made the mistake of waiting until I found the right man in my life to start a family. So, in all honesty it is a bit to late in the game to do anything other than be as healthy as I can at my weight. I am being put through the mill hormonally, being physically invaded in every way possible to get pregnant. So, yes I took things personally and if you felt bullied I am sorry. But, that is how I feel every day of my life when I am judged solely by my physical appearance.
So, again I apologise for the drama.

pl dont leave sc cos of this thread. please
how about if i close this thread?? and then we can put it all behind us, dust ourselves off - and start again?? pl let me know what you think.
eva
...i was just thinking........ how about if we see any 'weight type' uk articles, that we just post the link . and then close the thread?? that way we can all see the news - but no one gets their feelings hurt about the thread??
eva
Snow never apologies !! that is what this place is all about talking, laughing, sharing and yes even arguing !!! it is obvious to every one that you are upset at comments which have been made on this site and I am sure that no one meant to make you feel that way.
All I can say it that no two opinion will ever be the same, and we will always disagree especially on a subject that most of us have first hand experience with. But don’t leave us UK cysters we do have thing to offer !!
I do agree with Eva close the thread, and start again ! …………………..
