Hi! I'm new at this so I am not too sure what I am doing! I was diagnosed with PCOS 3 1/2 yrs. ago. I have 3 beautiful daughters (6, 2, and 1 yrs.) who need their mommy to be more emotionally available to them than I have been able to be lately! (make sense?) But I am feeling bummed-- I am extremely overwieght, I my hair is falling out, and everytime I look, I have more hair growing in places where it shouldn't be. I also have high blood pressure that I can't seem to control with medication. I hate going to the Doctor because they don't seem to care or help. My husband is great and tries to be supportive! I just feel so unattractive, tired, and worried all the time. Something has to change but I feel so overwhelmed, I don't know where to start! If I lose weight, will my hair stop falling out and will the extra body hair stop growing? How do I lose this weight? I've joined a gym but it doesn't seem to be working! Sorry to unload! I just don't know who else to talk to about this as none of my friends or family have had to expereince this. Any feedback would be appreciated!
Do you know if you are insulin resistent? A lot of people with PCOS are and that makes it had to lose weight. If you are...I think I am, I will find out next month...you can follow the IR diet, it's a book that helps you get your IR under control and that helps you lose weight. The basic message in the book is: Eat at least 7 grams of protein per every 15 grams of carbs and don't eat more than 30 grams of carbs in two hours. It helps us reduce insulin spikes and helps us use our carbs more effectively instead of turning into belly fat.
I read a thread about using natural progesterone cream for facial hair...I'm not sure if it helps with the hair loss...I have PCOS and my outward symptoms are very mild..but I don't ovulate and gain a bunch of belly fat.
Good luck!

Lisa and Hanni- thanks for your replies! This does seem to be a wonderful site-- that's why I chose to register.
I'm not sure if I am insulin resistant. The most recent test I had was borderline. so my Dr. didn't worry about it. But it sounds like it might be a good idea anyway to follow the diet. What's the name of the book? Thanks!
I don't know if I can be of much help, I joined a gym a couple of times and that is about as many times as I went. Getting the motivation to get up and go is very difficult, especially when we notice so many other small, but discouraging elements presenting themselves. But, we can't let it get us down...we are troopers! I find the earlier I get up in the day the better, I suppose you already do, being blessed with little ones scurrying around! I found walking with my music the best bet, the first twenty minutes are tough, but after that, my body wants to keep going, so I do for about half and hour or longer, depending on the weather and how much time I am able to afford. I think of the human body like a vehicle of sorts, fill it when it is empty, and you'll get several productive hours out of it. You don't have to fill it, just top it up every once in a while, with things that are good for it. When you do fill up, don't overdo it. Eat celery!!! That is my wonder food for weight loss, to me it is like an edible fat burner and it works. Drink lots of water and tomato juice, they are healthy and they fill you up. Cut the sugar out of your diet and replace it with splenda if you can, and cut out your salt intake and switch with spices. Those are two more surefire weight loss secrets that work too, as long as you stick to it. The spices are good for your heart and replace salt (which retains water weight and hurts your heart). Sugar adds so many extra carbs and calories to your diet, even when you don't notice! Splenda (the best tasting sweetner) is the perfect replacement. Just try to keep a positive attitude, we are all beautiful, and we all have things to live for. That should be enough motivation to get us acting on the road to get there...at least that is what keeps me going. I have lost close to 100lbs in the last three years simply by taking this attitude, eating better, and sometimes having to force myself to get out. But you can do it girl, we all can. Good luck and God bless you

The book is called "The Insulin Resistance Diet" by: Cheryle R. Hart and Mary Kay Grossman.
As for the splenda, just get a packet or buy a small package of it. I have heard great reviews, but there are some people that hate it (like me) It tastes like a chemical to me...I'm not joking, so it's all about personal preferance.
There is also a website: http://www.glycemicindex.com/ or http://www.diabetesnet.com/diabetes_...emic_index.php (they have glycemic index books too) If you can't do the balancing thing I was talking about at a certain time for some reason...you can try to eat a low glycemic index food so that your insulin dosen't spike, like a watermelon has a higher glycemic index that table sugar (weird huh)
Thank you all for your words of advice. I really do appreciate it! I feel hopeful! And I will definitely look for the book. I'll have to try the splenda thing... And I will try to keep myself motivated about working out-- look for the small victories! Thanks again!
I'm also the mommy of 3 great kids! Before my diagnosis I was sick and depressed most of the time, and I feel like that took so much away from my being a mommy! I now take met and prozac and I'm so glad I do. For the weight loss, in the year after I was diagnosed with PCOS I lost 102 pounds (eating healthier, portion control, and exercise). Then I got pregnant! What a blessing! But now that my daughter is 8 months old, this leaves me with quite a bit of weight to get off again. That's what depresses me most these days. It seems all that I was doing before that helped me lose doesn't work anymore! I have a supportive family and a good doctor so that helps a lot! Hang in there!
