Unhappy Feeling iffy about first endo appt.

I just had my first appt. with an endo and aren't sure what to think of it. After telling her all my symptoms and why I think I have PCOS she said I probably don't because I'm not overweight. I did tell her that I never ever had a period on my own and she said that wasn't a symptom and it sounded like ammenorrhea. I asked about an ultrasound and she said that wouldn't help because you can have PCOS and not have cysts or have cysts and not have PCOS. She is giving me blood tests for insulin and Prolactin tomorrow and then after I've been off birth control pills for a month or so she'll test me for hormones. So I guess I really won't know anything until I get results from everything. She does agree that there IS something wrong, just that she's not sure what. I had to talk her into the insulin blood test because since I'm not overweight she was sure I didn't have insulin resistance. I can't afford to see another doctor so I guess I just need to wait and see, but if anyone has any thoughts on this I'd appreciate it.

Confused I am!

The last statistics I remember hearing were that 60% of women with PCOS are overweight... hmmm... let's see.... that leaves 40% of us who AREN'T!

And, of course not getting your periods on your own IS amenorrhea--but amenorrhea IS a symptom of another problem! It isn't necessarily a symptom of PCOS, since there are other causes for it, but it IS a symptom.

I didn't have ultrasounds until we started the infertility treatment, my doctor said that it wouldn't give us any useful information. I was diagnosed on symptoms (amenorrhea, hirsutism) and bloodwork.

The fact that your endocrinologist is having the bloodwork done is good, but it is so hard to believe that any doctor worth their salt would not be up on the fact that thin and average size women CAN have PCOS. Is your endo a Reproductive Endo? You didn't say in your post.

In any case, you just keep posting your concerns here, and we will all try to help you out. It sounds like you will be able to get your basic needs met as long as you are prepared for your appointments with as much knowledge as possible. That's what we are here for.

Welcome to SoulCysters. Godspeed!
