Question Femara vs. Clomid

I am with a new RE... when we begin treatments again in January (after a break since summer '06) - she wants to put me on Femara instead of Clomid.

Anyone know much about Femara? Side effects? Effectiveness?

Thanks cysters!

Clomid did not work on me but I got pregnant with Femara and Follistim. I never would ovulate until the RE added Femara to Follistim. I only had 2 eggs each time but that was better than nothing. The side effects were sometimes I felt a little drunk and sleepy, but also due to having estrogen flowing in my body I felt crabby and mean.

The Femara suppresses the androgen so the estrogen levels can increase and me not being used to estrogen was a bit hard on me. I now feel sorry for women who go through this every month as PMS. I never felt so out of control of my emotions in a long time and felt this close to snapping. But it was worth it. I got pregnant the second cycle and I feel like I was pregnant the first cycle but I caught mono and had such high fevers I couldn't stay pregnant.

GOOD LUCK!!

I have 1 pill left from my first cycle of Femara, taken CD's 3-7. I did Clomid twice last year & neither worked for me, but that isn't to say it won't for you.

Either way, so far I haven't noticed any side effects. I have been emotional this week but I think it's due to being hormonal, stressed due to the holidays, etc. I don't blame the Femara!

I, too, though would love to hear more about how you compare Femara to Clomid. Also, did anyone get pregnant their first cycle of Femara 2.5mg? I'd love to know!! Also, when did each of you ovulate in your cycle when on the Femara? If I see a pattern, I may need to concentrate on those times for O'ing, LOL!

I've never tried clomid, but I got pregnant the first time off of Femara. I didn't have any s/e from it. As soon as AF arrives I'm going to do another round of it because I m/ced that pregnancy. Good luck!

What MG of Femara did you take when you conceived first cycle, 2.5mg or 5mg? Also, what days did everyone ovulate when taking the Femara? I may ask this elsewhere, too!

Does anyone know about any risks with Femara? As far as multiple births, or more serious stuff like cancer. I know that Clomid has a slightly raised risk of both, so I was wondering if there was any info for Femara.

Since using it for TTC is still off-label, I am a little concerned about using it because it doesn't have quite the same amt of research as Clomid. But, I'm just not happy with Clomid and have heard good things about Femara.

I ovulated on day 14 this month with 2.5 mg femara and a trigger shot. I had two eggs on day 13 that were greater than the size needed to ovulate, and I'm just hoping for no period this month.

Clomid gave me hot flashes and really bad cramps during the two weeks past ovulation. I've had no side effects with the femara.

I am starting 2.5mg Femera tomorrow. I took clomid for 12months when I was 20 and there was no pg. I am hoping this will do the trick, I have been ttc since 1995.

I took Femara days 5-9 and then injections and ovulated late as it was a long cycle to get me to ovulate. I can't remember what day. Femara only causes birth defects if you take it while pregnant, so when you take it early in your cycle by the time you get pregnant and if you get pregnant the drug is out of your system according to my RE at the time.

When I was on clomid I would turn into a shedevil all of the sudden with no warning. My husband would look at me like I was crazy and then I would realize I just went nuts.

I have 3 children...2 are Clomid babies and 1 is a Femara baby. I liked Femara better...no side effects, no huge cost associated with it....HOWEVER...

Shortly after my daughter was born Femara was banned from use in Canada as a fertility medication. There was a higher then normal risk involving severe birth defects and malformations.

We are now TTC #4. I asked my RE about Femara and although he says the studies done on Femara that made the government think twice about it were skewed he will not take any added risk to any baby or family and he WILL NOT prescribe it. (Admittedly he is protecting himself as well since malpractice insurance will not cover the cost of lawsuits concerning Femara since it has been banned here as a fertility medication).

Personally-I would never take it again. I need to feel 100% safe about what I am taking and Femara will always leave doubts in my mind. Our daughter is fine-she has a heart murmer which cannot be positively connected to the Femara and she will undergo heart testing every year until she reaches 13 to make sure there are no other underlying problems. It is enough to put doubt in my mind. I trust my doctor-and if he isn't comfortable prescribing it then I am certainly not comfortable taking it.

I wish you the best of luck.

I was told by my RE that usually they will start you out with clomid and if you do not respond to that they will switch you to femara. femara does not change the cervical mucous as much as clomid so the sperm do not have such a hard time swimming through. I did not repond to clomid at all, however I just took my first round of femara CD's 5-9. I just finished yesterday. I do not remeber the side effects from clomid, but for me femara mad me very lightheaded, dizzy, drunk feeling, and very tired. My pharmachist said these were normal and that they will take a couple of days to go away. hopefully this works. I have to test for ovulation and the we go in for an IUI hopefully I can get some great new year news!!

According to my RE and ob/gyn, they both agree that Femara is a safer option with less side effects. I became pg on my first cycle of Femara. Also, the only s/e I noticed was a dull headache while I took it, but the day I didn't take it...no more headache. We're doing another cycle with Femara and Follistim. Although I conceived the first time on Femara, I didn't respond the way they had hoped, then I miscarried....sooo...back to the drawing board!
