Fertility chances 'go up in smoke'
Exposure to other people's cigarette smoke may be as harmful as first-hand smoking, when it comes to a woman's fertility, Canadian research suggests.
The study, of over 200 women undergoing IVF or ICSI, showed that implantation and pregnancy rates in women who smoked and those who lived with a partner who smoked were comparable and, at best, half of those seen in non-smokers. These differences were detected despite embryo quality being apparently similar in each group, notes the team from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
"Therefore, we propose that implantation and embryogenesis are the most sensitive stages of development for the adverse effects of cigarette smoke," write Michael Neal and colleagues.
