There is a large article in today's Columbus Dispatch (local newspaper). This books states that the first line of treatment for certain fertility problems including ovulation disorders is to correct the person's diet. Here is a brief synopsis of what the authors say can enhance fertility. - Avoid Trans fats.
- Use unsaturated vegtable oils such as olive or canola.
- Eat more vegetable protein, such as beans and nuts, and less animal protein.
- Choose whole-grain sources of carbohydrates.
- Drank a glass of whole milk or have a small dish of ice cream or full fat yougart. (???)
- Take a multivitamin that contains folic acid and other B vitamins.
- Get plenty of iron but not from red meat.
- Avoid sugary sodas. Coffee, tea and alchohol (?) are okay in moderation.
- If overweight lose 5 to 10% of total body weight.
Let me know what your thoughts are and if anyone has purchased this book.. I don't want to waste my money if it is off base.

I become discouraged very easily and i look for new things to try so i went from teh fertility diet to a website called the 5 step fertility cleanse, it has a lot of the same thoughts such as reducing animal protein intake and useing veggies and nuts. It also gives you relaxation therapy ideas that actually make you feel so much better. I would recommend anyone to check it out, it may not work for everyone but it really has some valid points to go over. |

(Especially for all us cysters) If you can, check out the book from your local library. You may find that it is a good read. I learned alot about how herbs can naturally affect the body. I was surprised to learn that parsley is actually a mild stimulant for bringing on labor! |

Points: 143.94 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 143.94 | I bought this book at the beginning of the year, and after following most of the advice, I actually ovulated on my own after only 6 weeks! Before that, I hadn't ovulated on my own in years. I did Clomid for 3 cycles, and that didn't work either.
I've also been doing acupuncture for 6 months, but I think it was the diet & lifestyle changes that really put it over the edge. 8 years ago, when I ate a vegetarian diet with fish, I was ovulating then too. I'm amazed that staying away from meat, a little whole fat dairy, and getting into an exercise program has really made such a difference.
I hope more "cysters" consider this approach for a few months before trying the drugs. Its much better for your body, much less taxing (only good side effects) plus much cheaper too!
I can't tell you how excited I am at the prospect of O'ing on my own. |

My Mood: Points: 6,401.01 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 6,401.01 | My mom got this book for me, and I liked it a lot. It made a lot of sense, and it doesn't advocate any drastic changes. I quit drinking soda, and I replaced all my low fat dairy with full fat. Since I started Metformin at the same time as making these changes, I won't know exactly what's helping me (if anything does, fingers crossed), but I figure it can't hurt! Now if I can just quit smoking! (I know, it's horrible)

Points: 143.94 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 143.94 | The only way to be able to tell for sure if you've ovulated is if you have a sustained temp rise on your chart (half a degree for more than 3 days in a row). You can also check your cervix position - its strange at first but surprisigly reliable once you get the hang of it. I'm half-heartedly tracking temps now just so I know what's going on, but I had to get up at 4am on the day I would have had my temp rise, then was out of town for 5 days. I know I did O, though 'cuz I happen to be a the OB/GYN for my annual exam and I had him do an ultrasound to check to see if anything was growing - and I had a follice at 15mm! 4 days later, I had really intese O pain for a few hours. When I came back from vacation a few days later my temp was WAY up (way higher than my Clomid post O temps) and has stayed up for a week beyond that. If the witch comes to visit by Friday, then I will definitely know for sure.
My experiece with OPK's is that they're a total waste. They've never been accurate for me (of course, I can't really tell when they're positive -LOL!). Its sooo easy to temp every morning. If I could get up at the same time every day, it would be the best - that's really the only accurate way to tell. |
