During my marathon Smoochie U/S the other day, the doctor saw a small fibroid. He said it's only 2x3 c.m., so he isn't that concerned. He's taking a wait and recheck approach, and if it grows too much, he'll remove it after Smoochie's out.
I've done some research, so I know small fibroids rarely cause problems. I know that I should be able to get pregnant and have another baby after Smoochie, which is our plan. I know that high "bad" estrogen can cause fibroids, and that good levels of progesterone can shrink them. So, it seems like a lot of other cysters probably have fibroids, too.
Who's with me here?

Unfortunately, I have fibroids. I had one that I had to have removed, because it was in a bad location. Last time I went to the gyn, she said she thought I might have more growing... Whooptedoo!! We just got transferred to another state, so now I need to find a doctor here and see about getting an ultrasound to check it out.
As I recall, there are quite a few cysters with fibroid problems. I know Kat has had some really big ones removed. If you have any questions about removal, let me know. I might be able to answer them for you.
Thanks, Tracey! I knew this was something else I could blame on PCOS!

I have fibroids too. I have had few ultrasounds since being diagnosed with PCOS a couple of years ago, and it was only on my last ultrasound (in April/May) that they found fibroids. What my doctor told me was that they would monitor them and if they increase in size, or lots more start to appear, etc. I may have to have them removed. She said that they are currently not very big, so they don't pose any risks at this point. I am supposed to go back for a follow-up ultrasound soon to see how/what the fibroids are doing.
I hope that I don't end up having to have them removed.
Amen Cyster Viv!! I have a submucosal fibroid myself, and at this moment, I think it's feeling the need for attention. For the last 2 days, I've had a lot of pain in my lower right side. Anyway, it's my understanding that with most kinds of fibroids, they're not an issue during pregnancy. It's always something though, isn't it?

Kat, that's awful. And you must have been in serious pain!
I figured that since hormonal imbalances can cause them, there's probably a tie-in to PCOS. Either way, they suck! Now I'll have something else to worry about during all of my pregnancies!

Actually, they didn't give me severe symptoms (and no pain.)
I was tired a LOT (and would work on SoulCysters stretched out on the couch). My doctor said it's because I was carrying 6-8 pounds of rocks in my abdomen (I had 4 fibroids total.)
When I had them removed, I looked 4 months pregnant!
Fibroids are REALLY common in African American women...in fact 80% will develop them (compared to the 10% tht will develop PCOS.)

I recently found out that I have a large fibroid in the wall of my uterus. It's about 5cm. I have seen quite a few doctors to get their oppions on what to do since I want to get pregnant. All but one doctor suggests surgery to remove the fibroid but each doctor has a different surgerical method (myomectomy vs laperscopic ) I am confused!!! Plus one of my doctors also dx me with PCOS. I could use some help from anyone that has had fibroids removed and what the outcome was reguarding getting pregnant.

A lot of the time, the doctors decide which surgery to use based on the location and size of the actual fibroid(s). I had one fibroid about the size of a golf ball, up near the opening to my fallopian tube. Based on the ultrasound and hsg, the doctor figured it was strictly submucuosal, meaning under the lining of the uterus. The initial plan was to do two procedures at once. They looked at the outside of my uterus by laparoscope and the inside of my uterus by hysteroscope. They did this to see the exact position and extent of the fibroid. As long as the fibroid had not grown all the way through the uterine wall, they were going to resect (shave it down) the fibroid til it was even with the uterine wall. If the fibroid HAD grown through the wall, they would have finished up both of the scopes, and scheduled me for a myomectomy at a later time. I was fortunate, and was able to have the lesser procedure done.
A myomectomy is a major operation. Like a c-section, they cut completely through the uterine wall. If you have lots and lots of fibroids, or fibroids that grow completely through the uterine wall, it may be your only option. A laparoscopic procedure is less invasive, but only works well under certain circumstances.
Did the doctor explain why they wanted to do their particular procedure? Do any of the doctors specialize in fibroids, or gynecological surgeries in general? Have they explained why a fibroid surgery is indicated, in your case?
As far as pregnancy... so far, no luck. I was in a study for 6 months with confirmed ovulation. No BFPs for me. I am working my way back around to seeing an RE. We just moved several states away, so I haven't even found a gp yet. Anyhow... good luck to you. I hope you get the answers you need from the doctors. Sorry this is so long.
Mine was softball sized and degenerating (dying and rotting! YUCK!) in the outer muscle of my uterus (the myometria) I did not have a myomectomy (where they actually cut a section out of your uterus and stitch it back up.) I had a laporotomy (c-section incision) and they cut into my uterus and scraped out most of the fibroid. They did not cut all the way through my uterine wall.
I have a small piece remaining - about 2cm x 3cm. It still hurts and my incision still hurts (8 weeks post-surgery.) My GYN says I will need to undergo a myomectomy to remove the rest of it. I'm going to try to put it off, but my last one grew from nothing to softball sized in less than 8 months...

I hear THAT!
I was in the hospital for 4 days for my myomectomy, and for 2 weeks post op, I was walking like a 90 yr old man. The next 2 weeks, I was like a 65 year old woman, and the 5th week, I still had to have a wheelchair at the airport when I traveled.
No fun.
