Default Finally!!!

My doctor has agreed to put me on met. For those that haven't seen my ranting on other threads my insulin tests have been normal so the doc has been relunctant. The last time I pretty much begged lol, and the doc said that they would ask around and get collegue opinions. I was sure it was going to be a big fat no because I haven't found any doctors that know much about PCOS and IR around here (however other than the IR and Met, my doc has been great about it!).. anyway, I just got the call that the associate agrees that if I go on now chances are higher that I wont develop diabetes later in life and that some of my other symptoms might lesson. The doc is REALLY easing me into it.. 500 mg for a MONTH.. No complaints though.. The doctor said that they could go up to 2500, so eventually I should get on a high enough dose. From what I'm reading, 1500 mg is the norm?

I can't tell you how excited I am!

Good for you. Sometimes it takes being persistant with these doctors.
I just recently moved here a couple of months ago and unfortunatly had to go to a new doctor. He refused to put me on Metformin as well. He said PCOSers should be on BCP. Well I flat out told him I refuse to go the BCP route. After what seemed forever he perscribed me the Met. He was sharp and said, "I don't approve of this, you aren't helping your body any."
You know what? I am helping my body, and I feel great since being back on Met, better than if I was on those stupid BCP.

Yea 1500mg is the normal dosage, but I think the highest they will go is 2500mg. So if you go on that high dose, you'll be fine.
Good luck and hope you get to feeling better.

That's great that he did what you wanted anyway.. I haven't had a doctor that was willing to budge. Like yours, they all wanted the bcp.. I could accept that they didn't wnat to prescribe Met if they weren't comfortable, but I refused to go on the bcp. My problems started when I went on the bcp, there's no way I'd take a chance of worsening it. Plus, I want to try to change things, not mask symptoms. Someday I might give it a shot as a last resort or if I find something that counteracts the negative effects. This doctor was great about me not wanting to go on the bcp and even agreed that it might not be good for me. She had heard of Met and PCOS but wasn't comfortable prescribing because it wasn't FDA approved for that reason. Once she talked to the collegue she was awesome about it though. She's definately a keeper.

Does your doc know that you feel better now that you're on Met? Did he give you a reason that you weren't "helping your body"? From what I've read studies have showed that even on a healthy adult Met doesn't have a negative impact on blood sugar. Does he believe that the bcp could actually reverse the condition?

Thanks for the well wishes.. good luck to you too!

The one thing I've learned this year is that you really have to be your own advocate when it comes to your health. The more informed you are - the better. Everytime I go to a doctor's appt - I'm ready for battle. It's sad, but HMOs force doctors offices to be a revolving door. Plus PCOS is so complex.

My doctor also started me on 500 mg for the first month then I moved up to 1500 mg. I thought she might have done that b/c I'm thin but I don't know.

Best of Luck to you!

I totally agree. My gosh, the times I've had to go round and round with doctors.
I go back the 1st of December, so my doctor doesn't know how much better they make me feel. But I can't wait to tell him. He said it isn't proven that Metformin will actually regualte your hormones and periods. Since it is a diabetic drug for diabetics. BUT, the first time I was on Met, and now I have regular periods. I feel my hormones are better. I don't feel like a basket case. And I firmly believe it is from the Metformin. Somehow it does what it does to my insulin which effected my hormones.
I told him we wanted to get pregnant, and that is one of the reasons I don't want BCP. He said well, I'll take you off of it when that time comes. I just started laughing, because I said we wanted to get pregnant now, not a year from now. He wasn't listening to me.
He said BCP is the only thing to regualte AF. So I can't wait to tell him Met has me regulated not BCP.
I totally agree with you Determined, my problems felt like they increased as well while on BCP.
I'm glad you found a doctor that you say is a keeper. That is so rare..LOL..My original doctor who diagnosed me back home in Texas, was a keeper. He was awesome. This new one, well he's a different story......
Take care,
