After 2 years of me telling doctors that I think I have PCOS, I finally went to a GYN that said to me (without me having to bring it up): "Sounds like you might have PCOS." YES, THANK YOU!
I have been dealing with the symptoms since I was 12-years-old, but it wasn't until 2 years ago that I actually discovered what PCOS is. My new GYN ran a few preliminary blood tests that I must wait for the results, but she is almost 100% positive that I have PCOS. Now, onto my question: she currently has me prescribed to take 400mg of Prometrium and then once the bleeding starts, to begin taking Yaz. Does anyone have any experiences they can share with either medication? I know I am to expect HEAVY bleeding with the Prometrium (something I am definitely not used to, considering I only get my period once a year if I am lucky), and to tell you the truth...I am not really looking forward to it! Any tips/suggestions to help with the heavy flow would be greatly appreciated. I wish I could just take off of work for the period of time that this is going to occur, but I am not that fortunate. Also, any personal stories of Yaz would be great!
Congrats...I know when I actually found out I had PCOS it made me very happy. It explained so much and I'm enjoying the treatment so far...Met has definitely helped me with hunger. I used soy this month and am hoping that it'll help me O.

I didn't take the promethium but I did take a medicine to help get a period started and I too was scared it was gonna be awful after not having one for over a year and not being used to it, but it really wasn't to bad, my Dr told me to start my BCP as soon as my period started and it ended up only lasting about 4 days with pretty much an average flow.. the cramps were pretty severe the first day or so, but i just stayed on naproxen around the clock the entire time even if i wasn't hurting! good luck!
I dont know about the medication you are taking but I wanted to say welcome to the cysters as well. Im also a newbie here but I have been struggling with PCOS for several years and am just now taking steps to get it under control.
To help deal with heavy bleeding, I reccomend hot rice packs (fill a tube sock with rice and heat for thirty seconds in the microwave), aleve, and bananas.
I have never heard of Promethium, but if it is similar to Provera then I can tell you a little bit of what to expect.
With Provera you take the pills for a few days (however long DR tells you to) and then when you are finished a few days later you will start your period. My doctor had me wait 3 days and then start the Yaz. I was only on Yaz for one month because I switched over to the Nuvaring. I had no side effects with Yaz, but I wasn't on it long enough to really tell I don't think.
Since your doctor said to start taking the BC right after your period starts you really shouldn't experience a very heavy flow I woulndn't think because the BC is going to stop the bleeding within a day or so (at least in my experience).
If you do get the heavy flow just make sure you change your tampon often and I usually also wear a pad on very heavy days so that if I leak it doesn't bleed onto my clothing. Take ibprofen if you have cramps, get lots of rest and take it easy.
Good luck!!

Can't remember what the medication was called, but was given some kind of tablet form of progesterone when I was first diagnosed with PCOS (13 years ago) to bring on a period and BCP to start on day 1 of bleeding. From what I remember I took the tablets for a few days, stopped, then period started a few days later, and then I started the BCP from that first day. That period was maybe a little heavy to start with, but not much more than the periods I'd had previously (were quite heavy anyway though). Only difference was that it was longer than normal with spotting for a while afterwards until my body got used to the BCP, but was nothing to worry about. Like CarrieBerry says take Ibuprofen for the heavy days, hot water bottle helps a lot too

I'm in the process of having my first AF (from the progesterone pills) in at least 6 months, maybe longer.
For me, the cramps haven't been too bad. They're there, and uncomfortable, but not excruciating.
But the amount of AF! My word. I had heavy periods before, and this is about 5 times that. I use the diva cup (if you don't know what it is, I recommend it, look it up online). The diva cup is supposed to have a capacity of 1/3 of the total normal flow. You're supposed to change it (take it out, rinse and reuse) every 12 hours though, for sanitation's sake. So, in theory, it never fills up completely. Yeah well, mine filled up multiple times yesterday. I'm grateful that I'm using the diva cup because I don't think the tampons could handle the volume. It's still a real hassle though. I have to wear a back up pad as well.
I was expecting a heavy flow, but this one is difficult to deal with. I feel really tired, mostly. It's a very similar feeling to when a cold comes on (minus fevers, etc.), just sort of run down, and not well.
If your AF is heavy, I definitely recommend using two forms of absorption.
I have to work as well, but I've wiped my social calendar clean for the week. I'm also trying to keep my stress level low, as far as work is concerned. This is probably an important time to keep taking your vitamins, and eat well. Lot's of water.
Just wanted to pop in and say good luck, finally someone has told you what u already knew, if only these docs would listen to us eh!
And extra extra good luck with all your meds, its a long road, but worth it when you get there x
