Hi Ladies,
I have to share my good news, I finally have an answer. Someone is finally telling me WHY I lost my two babies.
First a little background for anyone who doesn't know my story.
I lost my first baby Nicole at 17 weeks due to PROM(premature rupture of membranes)in June 2004. I was told by my former OB that my loss was "just a fluke." I had no infection and no reason was found.
I lost my second baby in Feb. '05 also due to PROM, again no infection, my water just broke. Two flukes???? I didn't think so. My new OB and another at the hospital both agreed after reviewing my sonogram that it was NOT and incompetent cervix (IC)since my cervix was long and closed after my water broke. After a full $10,000 work up, EVERYTHING came back normal. By then I found SC and a PROM website and I was advised by the other women posting that it really sounded like an IC. My OB strongly diagreed. I asked for a referral to a high risk OB for a consultation. My Dr. agreed to it.
I had an appt. with a Peri on Monday. It was a preconception
consultation. I went in fully expecting to have to beg and plead for what
we want in hopes of having a full term pg next time.
This Dr. was fantastic!!! She looked over my medical records and within minutes, she told me that I was a textbook case of incompetent cervix. That next time I would need a cerclage bed rest, and biweekly appts. She apologized for our losses. She told us exactly what I learned here from you Ladies. That after a rupture the cervix can appear to be normal by a speculum exam. It looks long and closed because the pressure is gone. That it's impossible to seeing funneling from the outside and I should have had a good detailed sonogram to really focus on the inside of the cervix. She told me I had all the classic symptoms of IC, the back pain the pressure, the loss of the mucous plug two days prior, the cramping etc.
I am so emotional now, I'm so sorry we had to lose our first two babies in
order to meet this Dr. But, I'm so full of hope now. I'm so glad I found someone to listen to me!
I'm so happy to finally have an official diagnosis!
I'm even happier to have a treatment plan for next time!!!
Finally the sun is shinning again in my world!

I am so glad that you found the right doctor and she can help you. I am happy to hear that you've got your validation. You know what is happening to your body. And now you have a good doctor that will listen to you and help you have a full term healthy baby.
I am still so sorry you had to lose both your babies to find this out.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel and I hope from now on there is nothing but bright sunny days for you!
((hugss)) i am so happy for you! Finally you have found the missing link. Im so glad you kept pushing for answers and eventually found a great doc who could give you those answers! I just want to send you a hug because i can imagine that it is a time of mixed emotions for you now that you know the reason for your little angels departure.
I just want to wish you the BEST of luck on the next leg of your journey!!!

OH MY GOD!!! I was so excited when I read your title!!! I'm so glad you found a good doc who actually listened! I KNEW it was IC!
And I'm so glad that she'll be ultra-cautious next time. I won't have to do bedrest unless they find cervical changes (but my doc agreed that he'll write a note for work if I want him to - I think I might!). It must be so confusing emotionally for you right now, though. You finally have your reason, but it's too late for your first two babies. ((HUGS)). We'll cry over that tomorrow - today, we're celebrating!
BTW, are you coming to the VA get-together?

OMG, I'm so happy they are giving you a cerclage next time! As I mentioned to you a few days ago, one of the reasons my doc gave for PPROM is short cervix. I guess I should have maybe elaborated...short cervix doesnt JUST mean naturally short cervix, it also means short (shortened)from funneling or early effacement due to IC. Anyway, even if it was bacteria that caused your PPROM and not just IC, I still think a cerclage is a good idea because it can help keep the bacteria out. I'm just so happy that someone actually gave you a reason and is willing to try something! It is such a shame that docs dont take these kinds of things into consideration sooner. This is exactly why I tell everyone PERI PERI PERI....they have so much more experience with cases like ours. There is a good IC site..its the MSN IC support group....you can learn a lot about cerclages and success stores to give you hope and there to get you started. I also recommend geocities.com/incompetentcervix - its no longer kept up, but there are angel stories there to make us feel not so alone, and success stories there to give us hope.

I'm so glad you found your answer. I know how frustrating it can be to not know what the problem is....I'm sorry you had to lose 2 precious angels before you realized all this but I guess you can think of it in the way that when you do have another child, he or she will have a big angel brother and angel sister to always look after them! Good Luck and LOTS of Babydust!!!!!!

I believe that we truly start to heal when we gain a little bit of hope for the future, even though we still have sadness. There CAN be joy, and it sounds like you are gaining confidence in that... I am so glad for you!
Remember, I didn't need bedrest at all... but my first birth was much later, so that might mean you are a more tricky case. I got checked biweekly with u/s and never saw trouble. That stitch gave me the only chance I could get, and I had a strong hunch that you would find out a similar plan was right for your next pg. I am thrilled that you found a doc who makes sense for you!
Happy tears!

I am so happy you found the answers. I'm crying for you. WHY doctors aren't more educated about IC is beyond me. I have read about so many doctors refusing to diagnose IC when the answer is seems so obvious. I'm so happy that you will get a cerclage for your next pregnancy and just as important, I'm so glad you've found a wonderful doctor!!
According to these docs, yes. I'm sorry your docs missed this, Gina. They should've been watching more closely since this put you in a higher-risk category for IC. ((Hugs)).
The get-together is August 6 at 11 a.m. at Great Falls Park, VA. It's bring your family and your own food (although I'm bringing an extra veggie tray for everyone).
Gina, congratulations on finding some answers. ("Congratulations" may not be the right word to use, but I am sure you understand the context in which it's meant.) I am sorry you had to lose 2 beautiful babies to meet the peri. The peri sounds GREAT, though.
There is a sticky on the PG Cysters thread that Viv put together about IC, and there are some links a few posts down the page about IC. Hope you find that thread useful.
You know, I really wondered when you said you were a little dialated when you got to the hospital.
I had cryosurgery when I was 15. I was told it does not cause IC, but I dont really believe that. There are a number of ladies on the IC site that had cryo as well. I was told only cone biopsies and LEEPs and cold knifes cause IC, but I believe that ANY cervical surgery can contribute.
