After a 4 month wait to see my doctor, she's about ready to diagnose me she says, based on symptoms and has decided to go ahead and try me on metformin! Since it's low risk and not expensive, it's better than running a bunch of endocrinological tests she wouldn't know how to interpret. It seemed like she was a bit out of her field though when it came to insulin resistance and reactive hypoglycemia. I told her at lunch, my blood sugar went from 100-149 in about an hour, then dropped to 102 in 20 min with high heart rate and shakes....she though dropping back that quickly was normal! She really only seemed to know about the type of hypoglycemia from not eatting often enough, not the kind that shows up here.
It's a relief to feel like I've been taken seriously! When I first went in, it was because I suspected my depression was not psychological, but physical in origin, either thyroid (tired etc) or hormonal since I had hair growing where it shouldn't, acne etc. I was pretty much told by the male NP that:at 40, I was too young to be having pre-menopausal issues, that he felt it was most likely situational as I've had many rough years due to my late spouse's illness, and lastly, I told them I had been having leg cramps and twitches which I usually only got when preggers or on the pill...I was told: you're probably just dehydrated! If there is one thing I hate in this world, it's being discounted like that! same reaction I have when I tech service guy at the internet/cable company treats me like a 'dumb' woman who wouldn't know the difference between a telephone line and an usb port!
Congrats on a Dx and prescription! It took me over 3 years and 6 doctors. Everyone was either telling me 1) nothing was wrong or 2) something was wrong but they didn't know what/couldn't treat and I should go see so and so. I know the feeling of relief when you finally can do something productive!
I hope everything continues to work in your favor!
I did a lot of research and came up with the answer myself.....but needed the dr to confirm it...let's just hope the Met makes a difference...anyone know how long it takes before you notice it working?
Interestingly enough, I'd just read how it could take a while to start working, and I've only been on it a couple of days....My bloodsugar has barely dipped below 100 in 2-3 months even after no food all night etc....I was out with the kids today and running errands and we were in a store when I started feeling spacey/low on bloodsugar..started with yawning, then spacey, then I had to concentrate more to speak....I bought some nuts and ate them together with a small amt of chocolate covered crackers, and drove home thinking I couldn't be that low since I'd not dropped below 100 in a while....I tested myself after maybe 15-20 min and it was only at 88! which is lower than I've seen in months and that was AFTER I had eaten nuts and a little chocolate! Could be coincidence, but I'm hoping it's the met.
