Default Finally Got My PCOS Under Control!!!

Hi Ladies!

I haven't posted on here for a while, but I wanted to share my story with you all. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2005. I had painful ovarian cysts, severe weight gain, thyroid issues, insulin levels >10 etc. I've tried 5 different types of birth controls, metformin, metformin XR, Glucophage, Glucophage XR, diet, exercise (obsessive I might add) and nothing seemed to work.

I went to at least 10 different doctors in the Houston area, ranging from endocrinologists to reproductive endocrinologists. I was a patient of Dr. Michael Allon off and on but got frustrated because I wasn't seeing any results.

In 2004 I had an MRI which indicated that I had a small micro adenoma (tumor) around my pituitary gland. At that time the endrocrinogist said I should keep an eye on it but it shouldn't cause me any issues because my prolactin results were normal.

Around last November, something told me to follow up on that old diagnosis. I went to Dr. Jeffery Brown (endrocrinologist) who ordered another MRI. Sure enough, it was confirmed that I had a micro adenoma. After seeing a neurologist, he said the tumor was not large enough to operate on but he's sure that's what was causing my PCOS symptoms. (I should note that I have a history of endocrinological issues (hyperhidrosis, thyroid etc.)so this made sense.

I asked to be put on Fortamet (which he agreed) since that was the only brand name medication I hadn't tried yet. Dr. Allon had me on Loestrin FE which helped my cysts tremendously. I am also on Dostinex to help with my prolactin levels. Dr. Brown says that high prolactin level can cause ovarian cysts.

I am happy to say that after 4 years I am FINALLY healthy. For the first time in 4 years, my insulin levels are at a 2.4 (range 0.0 to 29). My weight is down by 7 pounds and I have ZERO Ovarian cysts. I have energy and I feel like i have a new lease on life.

I wanted to share this with you all b/c I want to encourage someone. Don't give up until you find the right doctor that is willing to try different treatments. I had to go to two, but that was the best decision of my life. I would recommend Dr. Allon and Dr. Brown to anyone in the Houston area and beyond. Many of Dr. Brown's patients fly in to see him.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I've been on the PCOS journey for a while and I don't mind sharing my experiences. I'm thanking God every day for this new lease on life

Take Care!

Carolyn

Congratulations!!! I am so happy for your success. It gives me hope. I am trying to find the right med combo because I am sick and tired of being overweight. I am currently on Yaz and 1500 mg of Metformin, before was on 1,000 mg. I've lost only 5 lbs. Plus I am always tired now.

Keep up the good work!

By any chance do you lack the sense of smell?? I was told that I may have a tumor on my pituitary which was causing me to not smell. I was curious if there was a connection between this and PCOS.

Dr. Michael Allon (drallon . com) is on I-10 between Wilcrest and the Beltway. He is a great doctor.
