Finally got T3 result.......don't know what it means! Please help!
I have searched for ages for articles/posts on interpreting T3 test results and cannot find anything.
Can somebody let me in on a link which will help me please? I have had some thyroid test results back and I'm not sure what the ranges should be?
I know my TSH of 2.4 miu/L is normal but I'm not sure about the following:
Free T3 = 3.7 pmol/L
Free Thyroxine = 13.7 pmol/L
I am trying to pursuade my Dr and Endo to let me try a T3 supplement but I am not sure if my test results would support this theory? I also have an adrenal problem (only partially confirmed - I'm having to get private tests to prove it fully) and I have heard that once your adrenals are 'supported' (I'm talking herbally here) that sometimes thyroid conditions can improve significantly, so maybe if they won't let me have the T3 it won't matter too much if the herbal thing works.
I think the American way of measuring these hormones may be different to our British way, as when I have seen other people's figures, they seem to be way different to mine. Is there a way of converting these so I can work out if mine are okay? I'm sure I saw something like that before on this board.
They didn't give me any lab ranges and I don't know what they are off hand. The only range I know is for the TSH, which I know is normal. I'll try and contact my GP to see what the ranges are.
#1 Your lab is going off old lab ranges for TSH. New lab range is 0.3 - 3.0
#2 Your T4 should be about 18-20 optimally. It's low.
#3 Your T3 should be about 4.5-5 optimally. It's low.
Based on a borderline TSH of 2.4 I'd think you could benefit from a very small dose of thyroid ... I don't think many doctors would give it to you though... they'd make you wait until later when your TSH went higher (headed more past 3).
But it definitely looks like you have beginning stages of disease, or are in a slump (sometimes these things recover).

Thanks Shenacat but I was actually diagnosed Hypothyroid about 7 years ago and am currently on 150mcg of Thyroxine - sorry I should have mentioned it in the above.
The reason I specifically asked my Dr for a T3 blood test is because I still suffer Hypo symptoms and think I would benefit from T3 supplement but in UK it is VERY diffcult to pursuade any Drs to prescribe it for you. The few that are willing usually end up in front of the GMC for malpractice Just getting the T3 test itself was a major triumph for me, as I have been trying for years.
I was aware of the new TSH range but we are always slow to catch on to new things in this country. A couple of months ago I went to see a Gynae and he asked why I was taking Spiro and when I said it was for PCOS he said he'd not heard that it could be beneficial for the condition!!
Anyway, thanks for all the info - it confirmed what I suspected really!
