Default FINALLY a normal TSH (So why am I still on Synthroid?

Mostly coming here to share some good news in the wake of my prior thread (TSH not going down.)

Finally went to my doctor's office and got new bloodwork, and received the results today.

My TSH, which was 4.3, is DOWN to 1.8!!!!!

I called the doc's office and spoke to a nurse, telling her that I needed a prescription for my Synthroid if I was supposed to be taking it at all, seeing as how everything is normal.

Doc told her that she wanted me to stay on it and she wrote a new prescription, for the same dose I had been talking. (100 mcg/day, an extra half a pill one day a week.)

Since I won't see the doctor for six months, just thought somebody might know . . . if my bloodwork is normal, why do I need to continue on the meds?

I would say your normal TSH value is because of the Synthroid. So this means you're at the right dose and should keep taking it.

Hate to tell you, but you'll probably be taking synthroid for the rest of your life. And the dosages may change too. Your doctors will check your levels every so often to make sure you don't need a higher or lower dose.

I didn't read your other post; was it about 6 weeks before another blood test was done (after starting the med)? That's how long docs usually wait when you first start taking it or have your dosage changed. It sometimes takes a little while before the levels are where they should be. My DH is hypothyroid too and his took a few months before they got him leveled. They had to keep adjusting his dosage.

Like the previous poster said, your levels are good because of the synthroid. Synthroid doesn't fix the thyroid gland; it just assists it (or in extreme cases, replaces it), to make sure enough hormone is in your body. If you stop taking it, in a few weeks your levels would be back to what they were, or possibly even worse.

There are other who can get into the more scientific explanations for you. Hope this helped a little.

Glad to hear your levels are better too.

My doctor checks my blood every six months, and leaves me a voice mail after the bloodwork comes in with further instructions. The last time I went to see her, my TSH had actually gone up a little. from 4.23 to 4.3. This is the first time in a year and a half that it has actually gone DOWN!

I really think it's the South Beach diet. It's not supposed to help with thyroid, but it does!

your bloodwork's normal becuase of a medication -- it can just as easily go back to being abnormal without it.

Thyroid medication is not a cure unfortunately. You'll need to stay on it and have regular blood tests to monitor it
