Question financing for international adoption

DH and I are interested in adopting internationally (probably China). We've been delaying getting started due to finances. How do people afford to pay for all the expenses associated with adoption? We just moved into our home 9 months ago, so we really can't pull equity out of it (there's no much in it). It seems like it would take forever to get together the money needed to do this. Are there any options out there? Has anyone taken out a loan or found financing in other ways?

Thanks,
Shari

We took out several loans to pay for our adoption. Some of the fees we paid out of pocket as they came up. Like the home study, INS, authentication of documents, etc. The large agency and country fees, we took out personal loans for. It was an expensive way to go, but since you get an adoption tax credit that really helps pay off the loans. There are also alot of grants and loans out there specifically for adoptions, so you might check around. I know others do fundraisers, craft shows, etc.

Best wishes,

Congrats on your decision!

Do either one of your employers offer adoption help? Many employers do now.

There are also companies that give low interest loans to couples adopting but I haven't checked in to it, just heard about it.

We are fortunate to have saved every penny over the last couple years b/c we knew we were going to adopt.

The other fortunate thing is that all the fees aren't due at the same time. We've found that the biggest costs are going to be in China which doesn't happen for about a year after you start the paperwork.

Good Luck!

We paid the smaller fees as we went (out of pocket). Then when the big agency and country fees came up we got a zero interest credit card and used one of the convenience checks we got with it. Then we paid that off with our tax credit and never had to pay any interest at all on it
