Default Finding lots of gray, afraid to color!

I haven't colored my hair in a long time....since before I was dx with PCOS. I'm finding more and more gray every day. Not huge amounts but enough that I notice it. My mother went gray young, darn it...I figured I would too (I'm 28!).

I really want to color my hair...The color is really flat and I think coloring it would make it shiney again for awhile. I'm afraid to do it though! My hair is so thin and I don't want to do anything chemical to it for fear that it will fall out more....

Will I really damage my hair if I color it? Will it fall out faster?

Any suggestions of which brand is better or more gentle?

I've always used L'Oreal products and have been happy with them. No disasters in many years. Of course, you could go to a salon and tell them your concerns and have it done there, too.

To the best of my knowledge there's never been any proof that coloring your hair will make it fall out faster. If you use the product correctly, it won't influence the growth cycle of your hair.

Now, coloring does cause some "damage" in a way, since it disturbs the cuticle of your hair, in order to deposit a different color. Usually, this causes your hair to "look" a little thicker since each hair shaft has been "plumped" up a bit. But using a coloring product, or having it done in a salon, should not cause the kind of damage to your hair that makes it fall out faster.

I am 26, and I have a few gray hairs, and I use a semi-permanent color just to give my hair some extra flair, specifically Natural Instincts, and the gray hairs disappear, but it doesn't last as long as permanent. Semi-permanent, however is gentler on your hair, and it actually can help improve the texture of your hair. Loreal just came out with a new semi-permanent color which I am going to try next week.

You could also go to a good salon, and get it done professionally if you want to make sure your hair is not damaged by coloring it.

Hi,

Sometimes dyeing the hair can make it feel thicker so it's not such a bad thing. I'd make sure to use a semi-permanent, stay w/in one or two shades of your hair (usually the dye is darker on the hair afterwards than on the box though). I just tried Loreal's Natural Care and liked it, mostly cause of the extensive color choice. I also like the Garnier 100% Color but that is permanent.

There's also shampoo in dyes that are not permanent but are supposed to be the most gentle.

Hi,

I use Naturcolor from Herbaceuticals. It's for those who are chemically sensitive or don't want to use or smell heavy chemicals in their hairdye. Very gentle! It does a wonderful job and my hair seems a bit thicker after use and stays VERY manageable.

Thanks all! I bought the L'Oreal semi permanent...I forget now what it's called but it washes out in 28 shampoos. Covered up the gray nicely and my hair is so soft and thick this morning! AND - the dye was buy one get one free which is a really good deal for L'Oreal products.

Thanks again!
