Please go and check that your smoke alarms are working (you have got smoke alarms, haven't you???). Check the batteries are OK, and wave some smoke underneath to check the sensor is working. Don't take any chances!
It's worrying isn't it? I'm most concerned about road accidents as I don't think the army have the cutting equipment to help people if they are trapped.
However, I do think the firefighters are underpaid. I wouldn't risk my life for £21,000.
Hope it gets resolved soon.

My DH is a firefighter. We're OK financially because I have a well paid job, but there is No Way a firefighter can support a family and a stay-at-home Mum. Lots of firefighetrs work a second job on their off-duty days....taxi driving, painting and decorating, plumbing, plastering, all kinds of trades. My DH off-duty job is child care for our two daughters so I can work.
If you're watching the news tonight (especially London area), there is a possibility you might see DH and his crew, as the TV cameras are planning to be at his station tonight for the start of the strike.
Although I'm not living in the UK any more I keep up with what's going on.
I hope the Firefighters get the financial recognition they deserve.
They do a wonderful job.
You're right DEEDS it takes a special person to put their life on the line everyday for that amount of money.
I've just been looking on the news at the huge fire in Edinburgh and thankful that the latest strike was called off. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/2555023.stm#map
My dh works on South Bridge, which is closed due to the fire.
It's horrible as all these buildings are ancient and will proabably have to be demolished, but at least no one has died.
I hate to think what might have happened had the professionals not been on duty. There's no way the Green Goddesses could have tackled something on this scale. It's still burning now.
I say give the firemen the money - we can't have this happening if they are on strike, people will die.

DH is fine, glad to be back at work (for the moment! Strike will be back on if nothing comes of the current talks). He's been driving me mad stressing about the whole situation, and the loss of pay just before Xmas etc.
at DH's station, like many others, they have decided that they will in fact turn out to deal with incidents on strike days if anybody asks them to.....they have given their station direct phone number to the local police and told them to call anytime they need the firefighters.
And they would of course turn out for any major incidents which occur.
Just had to chime in that I wholeheartedly support the firefighters claim. One of the things that really brings the whole thing home is the 11th September tradegy. If any major terrorist attack happened the first people to go in would be the fire fighters, just as it was in New York. In fact the firefighters are the first to go into all the most dangerous situations. If a building collapses, it's not the police, or the army, or the nurses, or doctors who go in first to make things safe and pull out anyone caught in there - it is the firefighters. Whilst I also have the greatest appreciation and respect for the Police, military, medical professions, etc. I do think the firefighters have not been given the recognition they deserve for putting their lives at risk.
Okay, that's me getting off my soapbox!!
Come the revolution they will get their just reward!!
