Our first home visit is today at 5:15 pm EST. I'm leaving work in about 30 minutes. I need to vacuum the floor in the office and probably pick up a couple of things that DH left around the house this morning, but I think we're ready. Wish us luck.

Well, the home visit was pretty much what I expected. She was here for about an hour and a half. She mostly went over compliance with us (making sure we had smoke detectors, a fire escape plan, no criminal background, etc). Then she discussed our family tree with us. It turns out she's my aunt's cousin and knows part of my family really well. Finally, she did a quick tour of the house. There were a few things she mentioned that stands out. First she asked if I was just a neat person since the house was so clean. Towards the end of the visit, she said that one woman in the system currently has 1 child of her own and 3 foster kids under the age of 4. She said if they had more places to place these kids they would have because it's too much for her. This gives me hope that we'll get a placement pretty quickly once we're approved.
She really didn't mention much about how much baby gear we needed to have ready. It sounds like as long as we have a bedroom with a crib and other furniture in it we will be okay. They will provide a first aid kit and some babyproofing things. They also bring things with the baby such as a care kit and provide a clothing allowance. I still want to have some basic stuff here at all times and be as ready for any situation as I can be. Also, my parents can babysit and even keep a child over the weekend as long as the case worker has a chance to meet them.
