Angry First Met dose and I feel like hell!

I haven't actually gotten sick, nauseated or had to go to the bathroom... yet... I took my first dose of Met around 530 with dinner and a couple hours later, started feeling cruddy. I feel like my body is in slow-motion... almost like the side effects of too much antihistamines... that slow/heavy feeling to all my limbs. I feel light-headed, fatigued and frankly a little zoned! I ate a snack around 930 (some protein) to see if it would help, but it didn't. I have to say I'm feeling a little scared of what's to come reading all the posts and wondering if it's worth it since I'm not trying to conceive. I am newly (finally) diagnosed with PCOS, although my glucose tolerance test showed hypoglycemia rather than IR... but I have the strong familial history of type 2 diabetes. I have moderate hair loss - androgenetic alopecia (diagnosed in 2002), carry my weight in my belly, very irregular menses (about every 3 months these days). Anyway, thanks for all the info. I'm going to stay well hydrated and hope for the best

welcome to sc i was wayyy tired when i started met, too. But the feelings soon went. I find that if i avoid greasy/fatty/sugar foods as much as poss, and always eat with the met, i can manage it.

I just started met 2 days ago and have been feeling the same way - mostly really tired and zero appetite (took a long nap yesterday afternoon cuz I just couldn't stay awake) and just kind of like I have the flu. I hope it gets better for you soon.

Default Met not really working?

I've been on Met for a couple years now, even before I was diagnosed with PCOS, and to be brutally honest, its not really helping with the periods, all I get stuck with is the stupid side affects. If anyone has any other medication suggestions...please let me know!

I know how you feel. I actually couldn't adjust to the Metformin. My doctor started me on half a 500mg pill and as soon as she uped the dose I got really sick. If things get too bad I would talk to your doctor about Glumetza, it a 500mg slow release pill. My doctor started on me on it about a month ago and I haven't had any problems and have felt better than I had in months.

I also find that I'm exhausted on Met, but have found that if I take B vitamins it's not too bad.
Though at the minute I do feel like a nap.

I'm sorry you're feeling cruddy but I'm glad that I'm not the only who feels sluggish/light-headed on this stupid drug.

My 1st day of Met was awful also. I had the stomach issues and was extremely drowsy. I found that taking B vitamins help keep me alert.

Dont worry , your side effects will subside once your body gets used to the meds. I hear alot of women lose weight. I am on met but am a "thin cyster", I havent had any weight lose but my hair is not falling out like it was a month ago. Good luck

Keep on keeping on! I started Met in November- 500mg/day for a week, 1000mg/day for another week and then the full 1500mg every day. It drove me nuts at first- but it's really not that bad now. I stopped taking it in January (we moved, and I felt like maybe it wasn't working)- but when I started it back up I went through the side effects all over again. Once it gets in your system it doesn't make you feel as bad, and after the first few weeks you won't have any problems anymore. Just tough out the first 2 weeks or so and it'll be better.

My doctor said he stopped prescribing Met because of all the side effects his patients were having. He is now prescribing Actos instead (which I am on). It is supposed to be the same thing as Met except without the side effects. Good luck.

I've been having Met for the past 3 months and felt really bad initially. I couldnt eat anything without feeling like throwing up right after.. But the effects have gone away with time and I'm starting to lose weight!!! So keep going...

I took my first 3 doses (I'm doing 2x500mg a day) and everything was a-ok. I had a brief nauseous period, but it was because I needed to eat. As soon as I ate it was fine again. However, after my fourth, things seemed fine, I went out with friends. I spent a good portion of the evening in the bathroom sitting on the floor hoping to just vomit and get it over with. Nothing. I was so sick and gross and frustrated that I thought to hell with it, my body clearly wants to puke so puke it will. I ate McDonalds. Ah, sweet relief. Hahaha. The puking was better than the almost-puking, dry heaving that went on for hours. And I don't even like McDonalds. This morning I feel 100x better than last night.
