My Mood: Points: 760.41 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 760.41 | First Post - New here I hope I posted this in the right place. Just looking for some advice, suggestions, support. Thanks!
Diagnosed with PCOS in 1988 when I was 8 yrs. old (began puberty right before this). Less than a year later diagnosed with hypothyroidism and a goiter which I know longer have (maybe). Stayed on Synthroid .088 from 1988 to 2003 (doctor after doctor and problem after problem). Ended up with thyrotoxicosis with psychosis and was taken off thyroid medicine and told by numerous specialists I do not have a thyroid problem. My TSH has been slowly increasing since this and is now at 3.5. For many years it stayed under 2.0 but I was also on medication.
Nov. 2006 started a period and it didn't end until March 2007. Jan. 2007 found out I was insulin resistant. February 2007 started Metformin and reached 2000mg/day. Laparoscopy and D&C in March 2007 (revealed large polycystic ovaries...oh shocker, tissue in my uterus, something small on my cervix causing pain during sex, but no endometriosis). March's bloodwork revealed NO change in insulin, testosterone, and cholesterol levels. Oh and apparently I have not ovulated in a long time. My ovaries were bigger than my uterus. I won't know what "long time" is until my next appointment. All this info was given to my family whille I was in recovery, and god knows what they heard and didn't LOL. My post-op appointment is coming up and I am armed with years of labwork and questions. I am thinking my thryoid is off again. It sounds silly but my body is sensitive to thyroid changes. Here is my labwork from January:
glucose fasting: 99
glucose 1 hour: 204
glucose 2 hour: 196
insulin fasting: 8.7
insulin 1 hour: 39.8
insulin 2 hour: 84.3
cholesterol total: 215
LDL: 143
HDL: 55
testosterone serum: 90
free testosterone (direct): 4.0
TSH: 3.510
thyroxine (T4) Free: 1.17
Other things he tests that came out normal:
DHEA-Sulfate 204
Creatinine 0.8
AST 18
ALT 41
Prolactin 14.5
CBC Panel
I can't wait for my appointment this coming Friday. I will know the results of March's labwork. All I know is my insulin, cholesterol, and testosterone levels have not improved with Metformin and he wants to try me on a new medicine. This is what the automated lab results system said.
My doctor has had me seeing a nutritionist in his office. They found I am deficient in B-12 and Zinc. I am taking supplements and am on a diabetic/low-carb diet. I've only lost 4 pounds in one month. I had been pretty thin last year and gained 60 pounds very quickly. Obviously the extra weight isn't helping but I wouldn't have gained it if it wasn't for hormone issues!
Can anyone tell me anything? At this point I'm just interested in talking to people that have had the same problems. Are there other things I should ask my doctor? I am not trying to get pregnant but I would like to in the next few years. I'm so glad I found this website. Thanks to anyone who can offer suggestions and advice. No matter how much you know or have learned, you always feel like there is something missing lol.

Just because it is normal now doesn't mean that you aren't having problems, Hypothyroidism won't get fixed by itself. I have times when I don't take my medicine and it's normal... I really encourage you to find a good endocrinologist who will make sure that's the right decision

My Mood: Points: 760.41 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 760.41 | Well my OBGYN is an endo too, but he's focused on the PCOS. I also haven't been as agressive as I should be and say "Hey mister look at my numbers and look at my past labs with other docs and think about it!" When I go in Friday I am going to get serious about it. Can't hurt anything that's for sure.

My Mood: Points: 760.41 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 760.41 | This is my 6th opinion lol over the past few years. All doctors are saying I no longer have a thyroid problem. It's just weird after 15 plus years of taking Synthroid and having hypothyroid that it's gone, but now the numbers are changing slowly in that direction again. Maybe it is all PCOS and all the docs are right. I'm just being paranoid. Have you gone off your thyroid med for years and then back on, or even had major dosage changes? I'm just curious if it's common to have it change. My mom's has never changed her whole life and I consider her lucky. Thanks!!

My Mood: Points: 115.19 Bank: 3,750.20 Total Points: 3,865.39 | Well, I take llevoxyl and I started off at .025... I started that 6 years ago. It was increased to .05 shortly thereafter and I stayed at that for a LONG time.. then in the past year I can't seem to keep my levels normal. I started taking .125 after TSH came back at a 18!!! Now I just got it rechecked and it's back to .04 which is on the hyper side- which I like! I always seem to fluxuate and I went off of it for about 3 months and it stayed normal (go figure) so they thought it was misdiagnosed, then the next month it skyrocketed!

My Mood: Points: 760.41 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 760.41 | It's crazy how different people can feel at different numbers. I had a mild stroke at 23 when I went subclinical hyperthyroid (0.02 I believe).
It's such a rollercoaster isn't it! Have you had any PCOS relief with Metformin? Sorry if I'm asking so much, but this is the best and easiest place I've found to communicate with other PCOS sufferers! Thanks for chatting

I have thyroid problems (hypo) that are a pain to control. You aren't alone and with the right doctor you can get your life back. I promise. *hugs*

I think you have the right attitude, you know how you've been feeling, what you've been through, have your lab results and want answers- i would say make sure when you go you have all your info, concerns, etc written down. Good luck in getting the answers and treatment you are looking for! |
