Hello everyone - my name is Jocelyn and I've recently learned that I have polycystic ovaries. I've wondered if something was "wrong" with me for some time now. Here's my story for anyone who's interested.
I have always had an irregular cycle starting with my first period. I always shrugged it off in high school because I was a fairly active girl and I read that that might have something to do with it. I was very thin all through high school, barely tipping the scales over 100 pounds at 5'4". I've never had any excessive hair growth.
Once I started college, however, things started changing. My activity level had slowed down but my cycle did not change. I visited the gynecologist for the first time ever after not menstruating for over 6 months. The doctor prescribed birth control pills to "straighten me out". It worked in the sense that I got a period every month but I had problem after problem with the BCP. The first one made me gain weight, the next one made me depressed, one caused me to have lots of acne, etc, etc.... I tried SO many kinds! I finally decided on the lesser of the evils and kept taking it.
I gained some weight during college but I figured it was natural and I exercised like CRAZY every day to keep it off. Once I started my full-time job after graduation, it was harder to keep a regular workout schedule like I did in college. I kept gaining weight even though my eating habits had not changed much. I was holding steady at around 130 pounds. I did work out quite a bit before my wedding but I was only able to lose about 5 or 6 pounds. It was really frustrating.
I started seeing a new doctor who wanted me to try Seasonale. I stayed on it for about 2 years and gained 10 more pounds. We were moving when my prescription ran out, so I didn't get it refilled. I lost about 20 pounds EFFORTLESSLY in the next couple of months. It was so bizarre. I was happy but I didn't understand why.
I switched doctors yet again once we moved to a new state. I decided to try the patch. I hated it. I decided to try Nuva Ring next. I loved it but my weight crept back up to 140 in a matter of months. I got a prescription for a diaphragm and have not looked back. The bad news is, I still have not lost the weight.
We moved again this past summer (my husband is a football coach - that's why we move so often) and I have changed doctors yet again. After an initial consultation, she decided to do a blood test and an ultrasound to see what is going on in my body. The bloodwork came back normal but she told me that I "definitely have polycystic ovaries". That's what brings me here. I believe I have Non-traditional PCOS: anovulatory, normal androgen levels, and possibly Insulin Resistance.
It is so nice to know that other people understand what I'm going through. I've read many articles posted here and I've ordered a couple of books from Amazon. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post and I look forward to "meeting" you all.
I just wanted to take a moment and welcome you to SC!!!

Hello Princess and everyone else!
I'm new here today too, and Princess, your story is so much like mine it's scary! Was on BCPs for 10 years to "straighten me out" too! When I went off of them last year to TTC I started having the same old problems from the teen years (months w/out a period, etc).
I was diagnosed in October and my gyno prescribed me Metformin. I just started taking that last week. I'm hoping and praying that will help AF and other symptoms. From what I have read on this wonderful chat board it sounds like time will tell!
I'm so thankful for all of the kind and supportive thoughts this forum has to offer. Thank you!
