Went to my Dr and he tested my TSH levels - I thought hypothyroid might explain a lot of my problems: awfull brain fog, always cold, hair thining, slight weight gain (15-20 lbs over the past 6mo to a year, with no change in diet or activity), occasional difficulty swallowing.
The TSH level came back as 2.46, with normal lab range being 0.25 - 5.0. So I figured it must be something else and moved on. But then I've seen a few comments here and elsewhere about anything outside of the 1-2 range potentially causing problems... any input? Are my levels something I should be keeping an eye on or asking for more tests about, or should I be looking for a different cause for my symptoms? (The only other thing I can think of is IR, and my glucose and insulin both came back in normal levels.)
Thanks!
Julie

Your TSH seems fine on first glance, but with the symptoms, I would recommend further testing. Did your doctor do a Free t3 and Free t4? What about antibodies?
I would request these tests.
Also your symptoms could be related to iron deficient anemia, b12 deficient anemia, or some types of food intolerances. Ask your doctor to test your ferritin and b12, the ferritin is your iron stores.
If you need iron, take liquid iron. It is better absorbed and does not constipate you. As an example, if you take liquid iron you can take 40-60mg/day to raise your levels but if you take a pill you need to take about 600mg/day. Talk about constipated The liquid iron I would recommend is by NF Formulas, is a white bottle with a green label and can be found in most vitamin/health stores. It has b12 and folic acid in it. Vit. C also helps you absorb iron.

I agree... at first glance, you are within the normal range. However, with your symptoms, further testing should be done. My dr says he likes to keep my TSH anywhere from 0.5-1.5 for helping me feel good. So far it is working. Go back and see your dr to discuss this or get a second opinion. You deserve to feel well!

Did he stand behind you and palpate your neck? Or look carefully at it to see if you have a goiter (enlarged neck)? There are other thyroid problems (goiter, nodules) that can be accompanied by hyper or hypo thyroid symptoms.
