Hello,
I bought a bag of flaxseeds and the back says they need to be grinded up.
I don't have like a coffee grinder or anything. Any suggestions on what else would work to grind them up???
Plus, could I just eat them withoutgrindng them up? Would they still have the same effect?
Thanks so much.

thanks for the info.
I haven't seen already grinded up flax seeds in the store. I'll have to look harder next time. I want lot's of energy, and that is a good idea putting them in the smoothie....We drink smoothies every morning.

The only problem with eating them whole is that they often go right through whole and come out the other end looking the same - kinda reduces their effectiveness somewhat. Do you have a mortar and pestle? That's another good way of breaking them up, though I have found putting them in a smoothie in a blender works quite well in breaking them up enough. You can also buy the linseed (flaxseed) oil in health food stores in the fridge - it's a great way of getting it into you also. Either way I'd keep your linseeds in the fridge as it protects the oils from going rancid.

I always understood you needed to grind them. I'm having this problem too as I have a huge box of linseeds but no grinder, not even a pestle and mortar. But someone told me what they do and I'm going to try it tonight, and that's to put some in a cup and pour on boiling water and in the morning they will have made a mush and opened, and then you can add them to smoothies. I haven't tried this yet though!! It might be a disaster!!
Putting boiling water over them then adding them to smoothies, just might work. Who would have thunk it.
Boiling them wouldn't make them loose thier vitamins would it?

I'm not sure if it would change the oils to put boiling water on them... they're okay in bread, so maybe it's the same. I'd be asking around for someones old blender in preference to it though, just in case it does change the oils. I know with the actual oil you buy it is very easily changed to a transfatty acid, which are bad for you, which is why you keep it (and all linseeds) in the fridge.

Heating them can definitely make them less effective. The best way to use them is ground. Whole flaxseeds in breads, crackers and cookies are only there for texture, not nutrition.
Ground flaxseeds go rancid quickly. The best thing is to buy them whole, store them in the freezer, and grind them as you need them. A coffee grinder can be bought for under $30 anymore. Then add them to your smoothie, top your yogurt with them, sprinkle them on cereal or over a salad. Heating is not good for them, so avoid cooking them.
The oil is another option, though you get none of the benefits of the fibre. If you use the oil, keep it in the fridge, use it within 6 weeks and don't heat it. Drizzle it on cooked foods once they go to the plate.

Ajani - do you know what the dose of ground up linseeds per day is needed to be effective?? I'd normally have a tablespoon of the oil - is two tablespoons of the ground up seeds about equivalent? That's about what I"m having now (I have the ground up seeds mainly), but I often wonder if it's enough.

My SIL started taking flax seeds daily--maybe twice a day. She is normally a very constipated person (goes about evey 3 days) Since starting it, she says she usually has 3 BM's a day!!!!!! WOW!
She said that in some nutritional counseling she received, they said that people normally have about 15 pounds of fecal material in them. SInce a lot of nutrients are absorbed in the intestines, this interferes with that, and people tend to lose out on lot of important vitamins.
I'm just rambling here, but she just told me this today and when I saw the thread I thought I'd add this info. BTW, she has lost 7 pounds in 3 weeks (she has been making some changes to her diet--weight loss not 100% from the flax alone.
Where do you all buy your flax seed? Would GNC have it?
I'm not sure if GNC would have it or not...It's worth a shot. Health food stores would have them.
I buy my flaxseeds at my local grocery store called Publix.
I've also seen them back home in Texas at Wal-Mart and H.E.B....
But I haven't seen them at Wal-Mart here.
BTW-Thanks for the info about your sister and her flaxseeds.

I get my flax seed at Trader Joe's, its not ground I dont think, but its not whole, maybe its cracked? Its over by the cereal and granola. Its super cheap, $2.50 for a bag that lasts me a while. I make my "Wild Morning Oats" and add two tablespoons to it and it gives 2400 mg omegas.. woo hoo.

If you dont want to have to worry about the oil going bad or how much ground flax is enough, you can take them in capsule form. I take 2000mg of organic flax oil capsules daily. I buy all of my supplements at whole foods but you should be able to find this type of stuff at any health food store.
