Hello,
I bought a bag of flaxseeds and the back says they need to be grinded up.
I don't have like a coffee grinder or anything. Any suggestions on what else would work to grind them up???
Plus, could I just eat them withoutgrindng them up? Would they still have the same effect?
Thanks so much.

So according to Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy, flaxseed will pass through your system undigested if it isn't ground or crush. But it says you can use a blender or food processor to grind it.
If you don't have a blender, it says you can eat the flaxseed partly crushed, so I bet if you have a meat tenderizer or a really heavy rolling pin you could put the seed in a ziplock bag and go at it. Might be a good stress relieving activity.
Ground seeds can be kept in the fridge up to 30 days.
Do you have a mortar and pestle? I think that would work, too.

I thought about the blender, but wasn't sure if it would work right. I'll have to try it.
Or I'll try that stress reliever and put them in a bag and pound away.
Actually I do have a wooden mortar. Duh. I didn't think about that either.
Allriighhtt... Thank you girls. I heard flaxseeds do pass right on through your system if they aren't grinded up so that is why I haven't eaten them yet.
Thank you, Thank you.

Benefits of Flax seed in Heart Disease and Cholesterol Lowering
Written by Gloria Tsang R.D.
Benefits of Flax seed - Heart Disease/Cholesterol Lowering
Its high content of alpha linolenic acids has made the ancient flax seed become our modern miracle food. Alpha linolenic acid is a type of omega 3 fatty acid, similar to those found in fish such as salmon. Benefits of flax seed as shown in many studies include lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) levels. Other benefits show that flax seed may also help lower blood triglyceride (Also Read: How to lower Triglycerides?) and blood pressure. It may also keep platelets from becoming sticky therefore reducing the chance of a heart attack.

Aside from alpha linolenic acid, flax seed is rich in lignan. Lignan is a type phytoestrogen (antioxidant) and also provides fiber. Researches reveal that lignan in flax seed shows a lot of promise in fighting disease -- including a possible role in cancer prevention especially breast cancer. It is thought that lignan metabolites can bind to estrogen receptors, hence inhibiting the onset of estrogen-stimulated breast cancer.
Recent studies also showed positive benefits of flax seed oil in IBD (Crohn's Disease and Colitis). Flax seed oil seems to be able to heal the inner lining of the inflamed intestines.
Moderately include flax seed in your diet. Indeed, a lot of food products contain flax seed such as bread, cereal and bakery goods. Bakers may use flax seed flour or include flax seed in baking.
5 Tips to include flax seed in home cooking:
Sprinkle whole or ground flax seed on your cereal and salads
Substitute flax seed mixture for eggs in home baking such as muffin and pancake (1 tbsp milled flax seed, plus 3 tbsp water = 1 egg). Final products will have less volume and taste grumpier
Include in other recipe when nutty flavor is preferred
Substitute flax seed oil for other oils
Try this Flax seed cracker recipe provided by the Flax Council of Canada
