Hi everyone,
As I'm typing this I'm wondering if I'm going to work tomorrow because I have come down with some sort of flu virus . At first I thought it was a stomach virus because of the sharp stomach pains, but now I'm dealing with upper, mid and lower back pain, chest pain, tiredness, mild cough and just feeling sick.
Okay enough of my woes.. my question is, has anyone been told by their doctor to get a flu shot because of having PCOS or IR? I think most diabetics are told this, but I was wondering about PCOS/IR.
I'm also wondering, since I've been infected once this season, is it OK to still get the shot to prevent further attacks.
I never get the flu shot and never will. Not only are they ineffective (if you get a shot for one strain, it doesn't protect you against any other, and at least half the people I know who get them get the flu anyway), but they have horrible ingredients (mercury, for one). This is true not just about the flu shot, but all vaccinations.
My doc asks me to have a flu shot each year. I haven't personally had the flu since I started getting the shot. I am diabetic too but my doc asked me to have the shot even before I was diabetic, I think mostly because I have children and I don't want to get the flu and then give it to them.
Hope this helps hun, and I hope you feel better soon.
Hugs
Jenny

Thanks for your replies and well-wishes
I went ahead and stayed home today, but I think I'm ready to face the world tomorrow.
I've heard about flu shots being ineffective before, but I also read that while they're not perfect, they do help some to combat not only the flu but flu complications - particularly in those groups at a higher risk for complications.
I don't ever recall any of my docs recommending it for me, but I was interested if anyone else's doc did. Whether I decide or not to get one this fall, I will definitely plan to go back to taking my vitamins and supplements as I should. I also may get another container of OPCs, probably the Isotonix brand this time.
Anyone else out there told by a doc to take flu shots??
I remember last year they asked that only people in high risk catagories go for flu shots so there would be enough left over for those who really needed them. I am IR and have never had a flu shot. I think my doc wants everyone to get one, but leaves it up to them to decide. The reason the flu shot is sometiems ineffective, is because it protects against one strain of the flu, but not all. They pick the one they think will be the most common/worst flu and make the vax for that one (that was how it was explained on TV I think). If you are vaxed for the one that is not the one gonig around, you are still able to get the flu. I had never heard of diabetics being asked to get a flu shot, but it makes sense.
My whole family got flu shots last year( for the first time ever) because my son is on an immune suppressant and an anti inflammatory for his crohn's disease, I am type 2 and we both can not risk getting sick. Last year was the first year that I haven't had the flu and none of us got the flu and there were lots of different strains going around. We didn't even so much as get the sniffles and haven't had anything all year long. It was great!! We will definately get flu shots again. Matter of fact, they are due soon.
