You should call your doctor asap. Or at least your pharmacist...

Maybe, maybe not. Err on the safe side, and call in.

I didn't experience any fatigue.

Kat, are you still taking Flutamide? I'm on 150 mg of spiro and after 8 years it's not cutting the mustard anymore. I'm going to an endocrinologist next month and I'm going to ask him about Flutamide.

Did you find that you could stop Flutamide after significant weight loss? Also, how is your hair growth now that you're not taking it? I'm currently experiencing hair loss as well as really, really bad hirsutism on my body. I'm really hoping my head hair will grow back and that the stuff on my body will go back to being fine and light (that's quite a stretch). I'm just curious to see how Flutamide helped you.

I'm not on it anymore. It's been about 9 years since I've taken it (or anything) for pcos. I only stayed on spiro for less than a year...Flutamide worked WAY better for me.

Yes. I stopped taking it shortly after I hit my 90 pound weight loss.

I still have some hairs turn terminal if my weight creeps up, but as soon as the weight is off, everything is back to normal.

I only had thinning at the temples, and that filled in nicely. My hair is currently very long (not as thick as you see it on tv - if you've seen me - since that's a 'fall'). It's not as thick as it was in my 20's, but I think some of that is age...the 'volume' of hairs is still thick, my individual strand density is lower. But by anyone's standards, I have a LOT of hair.

I had to fight HARD to get an Rx for flutamide, but it was worth it for me.

Just be sure to play by the rules: get regular liver testing, don't TTC, and don't drink alcohol.

Thanks for your fast reply Kat. My gyno has never prescribed flutamide before, so I figure I'll see if the endocrinologist can do it. I have a feeling he'll say no too. I just don't understand why getting an Rx is such a big deal...

RE: About fighting for an Rx, what exactly did you have to do? I'd like some advice before I go into "battle."

For any doctor who hasn't read the research on PCOS, when they look up flutamide, all they see is that it's FDA approved for treatment of PROSTATE CANCER, and is contraindicated for use in women.

End of story.

Back when I was fighting, there was VERY little research on PCOS and Flutamide. I stumbled upon a french study, as well as, a few more, and printed them out and took them to literally EIGHT doctors. Most were simply too afraid to Rx it.

My story was written up in USA Weekend: http://www.usaweekend.com/00_issues/...604health.html

The experience described in that article was the inspiration for SoulCysters. I wanted to make it easier for women to find research that they could take to their doctors, in the hopes that they would receive better treatment.

Thumbs up Side effects

I remember being tired the first few days and a little nauseous. That passed after a few days. Flutamide began to work quickly on my body, My hair loss cycles stopped almost immediately and my period cycles became exactly 28 days. I have had amazing head hair regrowth. I hope that it will work for you. Please speak to your doctor if the symptoms haven't subsided. I suffered with hair loss for 20+ years and it has grown back, not completely-yet, but enough for me to work with. Remember to be patient with it. I didn't have major regrowth until after a year on it, but not having the hair loss cycles anymore made me more than happy. Good luck.
