Flutamide-What happened when you stopped taking it?
I have had great success with Flutamide (250mgs) My hair loss has stopped, some hair regrowth, no more weight gains and I have 28 day menstrual cycles.
I am considering going off. I don't know of the long term effects on my body.
Will my symptoms come back? I have been on it for over two years.

Why would you want to stop a treatment that seems to be so good for yuo ?
I am on Flutamide yet i dont have hair regrowth OR periods so its not done me much favours except slow the shedding .....
However, if you are to stop any treatment with PCOS then yes all the symptoms will return, therefore al your new growth with fall out !
Surely you are being monitored on Flutamide ? I am not planning to stop this even though I dont have such good success although my body hair growth has reduced a lot

I'm thinking of TTC. My Endocrinologist does monitor me. He does order quite a few labs every three months. Everything has been perfect. I was just wondering about it. I know that I would have to be off Flutamide if I want to conceive.

Allison, if I were you I would reduce Flutamide to 125 mg for a few months before stopping completly. And I would only do that if I would KNOW for sure I want to ttc. I would also wait a few months after stopping Flutamide before starting to ttc so that you are sure Flutamide is out of your system.
if you do go off it take hopelina's advice. withdraw slowly and make sure it's totally out of your system.
also, they are now experimenting with a topical flutamide that apparently has given some people the same effects as taking it internally. they are not sure how much of it is actually absorbed by the scalp though. ask your doctor about this, i would love to be able to find it because taking it orally is really kicking my ass.
When you say flutammide is "really kicking your ass" - what do you mean? Is this in a good way, or a bad way? What is your experience on it? I'm just about to start taking it for androgenic hairloss
I would love to find a topical hair lotion which is a combination of minoxodil and flutamide... I wonder if it exists anywhere?

In the context where it is written it cannot possibly be meant in a good way

You can find topical flutamide and topical minoxidil. You can use them one after the other if you want to... Or one in the morning & one in the evening.
Hi, I havn't been on flutamide long enough to know if its working. Only a couple months when it apparently may take 6 to see results. When I saw it's kicking my ass I mean it's exhausting me. Where have you been able to find topical flutamide?

I came off of it because I didn't need it anymore.
After a year of hard work, I was able to get my labs down to 'better than normal' ranges. With continued hard work, I'm able to keep them there.
The only thing you may have to deal with is hair follicles that have turned terminal. They don't turn back to vellous, so you have to zap them with laser.
I've stayed off of flutamide for around 8 years now.

when you are on flutamide and you work hard (count the calories, work outs like strength and cardio etc...) and everything goes great, how you want to know if the flutamide made your labs good or your hard work?
So was it just good luck with stop using flutamide and your symptons didnt came back or is it because you still work hard for keep your labs down.
1. so you're off flutamide due to working hard with diet and exercise I guess? I struggle to keep my androgen levels down, and have serious male pattern balding...
2. zapping dormant hair follicles with a laser? is this a specific hair laser? do you think it works??
Flutamide is making you exhausted? oh dear, i feel like that already, without even having started it .... I'd have thought decreasing androgen levels (via Flut.) would help us feel better? I'm starting it next week... let's keep eachother posted

Flutamide doesn't work by 'bringing your labs down':

It works by blocking the effects of male hormones such as testosterone (androgens). Androgens in the body have many actions. They work by binding to receptors on cells and influencing the actions of these cells.
It was the VERY strict diet and TONS of exercise that brought my labs down.
There wasn't in luck involved.

Exactly.

What aspect of keeping your levels down is a struggle for you? Maybe we can help. The reason I went on flutamide was to stop/reduce the thinning, while I worked hard at lowering my levels on my own. Plus, flutamide combined with diet and exercise can really help reduce belly fat (according to some studies)

I meant traditional laser hair removal. The type of laser that might be best for you depends on your skin and hair type. It works for most women, and has been one of the BEST investments I've ever made.
There's a thread in this forum about some health insurance now covering laser treatments.
