Arrow Follicle Size and Ovulation

Hi!
I just started TTC. All of my bloodwork came back normal and my HSG test (tube test) came back normal. My RE/OBGYN prescribed Clomid at 100mg. I went in for an US on day 11 of my cycle and my largest follicle was 12mm. My doctor said they like them to be 18mm on day 12 and that the follicle ususally grows 2mm a day, so I would only be at 14mm.

Here is my question: what does the follicle size indicate???

does it indicate ovulation? if so, i took an ovulation test the next day (day 12) when my follicle was supposedly only 14mm and the test was positive. The ovulation test was also positive the next day (day 13), then it was negative the next day (day 14).

So I am confused. I thought if my follicle was too small that it wasn't mature enough and I wouldn't ovulate..... but I did.

What does this mean? does it mean that I ovulated with a follicle that was too small and it will not be likely to fertilize? Or does follicle size normally indicate if ovulation will occur and since I did ovulate - I have just as good a chance of conceiving as someone that had a 25mm follicle.

Thanks for your help. I am just confused as to what the follicle size indicates or predicts......

I myself just had ultrasound to check follicles, and Im in same boat as yourself.
I had 5 follicles in my right ovary and they were all around 10mm, my left ovary was empty
Well the doctor said the follicles needed to be at LEAST 21mm to produce a healthy fertilization & implant.
So he had me come back 4 days laters...
Another ultrasound...
Left ovary STILL empty, now only 2 follicles left in my right ovary and they are only 17mm... he said NOT big enough.
I wish you the best of luck!

I think the size signals the likely hood of a succesful conception and pregnancy to deliver a healthy baby is what I understood.

But like you I noticed my temps spiked... so maybe we will both have a surprise instead of AF this cycle -> fingers crossed. wink-wink.

Take care.

Question

thanks for your help! i am just so confused with all this stuff. I thought if the follicle size indicated if I would ovulate that I would be fine and have just as good chances since I did ovulate.

But I guess if the follicle size indicates liklihood of fertilization, then my chances were slim.

Are you certain of what the follicle size means/indicates??? Is anyone???

I guess I will find out at the end of the month.

Default Follicle Size and Ovulation

Follicle size and ovulation are not as related as we may want. You can have an LH surge causing ovulation, but your follicles may not be mature enough to release an egg. And the opposite is true - you can have a mature follicle but without an LH surge, it won't release the egg. You must have both for a successful ovulation. So it is the LH surge that determines when the ovulation occurs, not the size of the follicle. The size of the follicle does determine the viability of the egg, however. Usually it must be at least 18 mm or larger to be able to produce a viable egg. Any smaller it may still release an egg, but it may not be mature enough, so if it is fertilized it may not survive - thus resulting in a chemical miscarriage.

I went and had a scan done on cycle day 12. I had no follicles on my right ovary and two on my left at 16mm and 21mm, my nurse said this was a good response and said they usually go by 14 and up which seems small compared to what I have read. They called me back that day and said I was in the process of ovulating on my own. Now Iam in the 2ww waiting to see!

Wink

Hi, I got pregnant with my son 9 months after having had Gastric Bypass surgery. We had tried for several years before to get pregnant with no success. Now, we have been ttc since 2007, six months of last year with no success because I had a huge fibroid on my uterus that they didn't find until December. Surgery to remove it and ovarian drilling got me ovulating on my own but I didn't get pregnant when we could start trying again. In April my RE started me on Femara, since Clomid doesn't work for me. I am getting good ovualtion from my right ovary but not my left. As a matter of fact last month I didn't even ovulate from the left. I went in on Saturday for my day 14 follicle scan and I had 2 follicles on my rt ovary measuring 20x21 and 15x20 1/2, and nothing on my lt ovary-which we expected.

So we are praying for good results this month. I will take a month off next month, since I don't ovulate good from the left ovary, if we don't get pregnant this month.

I can only wish you the best of luck, we have all been there and know exactly what your going through. Keep your chin up and remember miracles happen when you least expect it. If they didn't I would not have my wonderful Zachary Dean!!
