I have been on metformin (ER 500mg) for the last week and everytime I eat chicken I get sick. I have read to stay away from fatty foods and carbs but this was my primary source of protein. Has anyone had this? Aslo, I know that fatigue is a side effect but I'm really drowsy right after I wake up through out the day, will this side effect go away soon? One more thing for the last week I have also had a low grade temp. Is this normal on Metformin? Sorry so many questions I'm just wondering if it's just me!! help?

hi -- i've been on met er 2000 mg per day for four years. i've also been reading the boards for three years, so hopefully this will help.
i have never experienced the problems you are having with chicken. you are right, chicken would seem to be a very good thing to eat on met.
from my experience, met seems to affect everyone differently -- there are no hard and fast eating rules. for example: some women cannot eat iceberg lettuce without immediate bathroom issues.
or high fat foods, etc.
in my case -- it's sugar. ANY time i eat something with a high sugar content, i KNOW i will spend the next afternoon in the bathroom. i've learned the hard way. so now i really try to avoid it as much as possible. if fact, now when i do eat something sweet, i can literally feel it entering my bloodstream like a drug....
you are just starting your adventures with met -- so give yourself time to adjust to all of the crazy side effects. it's not fun, but i find it to be very worthwhile. i don't even miss eating sweet foods now -- i guess it's not worth the results, for me.
good luck and hang in there. i hope this helps a bit.
I need to change my screen name to Alternating Food Aversion. I have been having them since starting MET and am happy to tell you that at least for me they change. One day I can not handle the thought smell or taste of a food item sometimes even an entire food group but a week or so later I am back to normal with that item/group and my aversion is toward other things. I've also recently began having cravings as well. Right now I would be on cloud nine with a peice of broiled lemon pepper chicken and steamed baby carrots. Yet the meatloaf I made today sits in my fridge as leftovers for hubby cause the smell totally made me ill. Eat what you love and avoid what bugs ya and I'm sure soon the aversion will stop or move on to something else.
Hugs and Luck!

Forever missing and loving all our children in heaven Bryson Quinn, Bridget Paige, Keleigh Anastasia, and all our early loss babies.
I have had this problem and actually I contribuate alot of my weight loss success to met due to food aversions. Anything that is high in carbs or sugar will make my stomach turn instantly. Also, certain smells of foods make me nausous--spelling??.
It is something that I am taking day by day and learning what I can and can't eat, plus I have lost 47lbs due to it so there is a benefit!! HTH

There was a documentary on Uk tv recently about chicken and the fast growing they are now subject to. As a result the majority of chickens bred for sale in supermarkets are getting higher and higher in fat. I obviously don't know where you are getting your chicken from but that may be something to be mindful of. Hope that helps.
I have the iceberg lettuce thing and for something that consists mainly of water and not a lot of nutrients, it causes me huge problems. But the types of food I have problems with tends to vary on a weekly basis.

Hello,
Just thought I'd give my two pennys worth. I'm having an aversion to chicken at the moment, didn't take my Met for 2 weeks on my holidays and since I started back on it, I can't face eating chicken at all, the thought of it now is making me feel queasy!!!! I did wonder if it was the Met or whether it is the TV programmes I've recently seen about the extra fat fed to chickens these days. I have these aversions to different foods regularly, unfortunately it's sometimes fruit, vegetables and yogurt I can't face, but at the moment it's chicken!!!! Craving red meat and bread..... But trying to resist too much. The body and mind are weird and wonderful things!!!!!!!!!!

My metformin no no's are salad and diet sodas. If I drink a diet soda and then get hot, I instantly get sick. And salad just on it's own makes me ill. Maybe a bit TMI, but my DH calls me the "salad shooter." I just cannot handle lettuce. Haven't had any other food aversions than those.

Hey Heather! I was just wanting to tell you that I was reading another one of my PCOS books and it seems as if a lot of women have problems eating certain foods after taking Met and there doesn't really seem to be any particular pattern as to what or why... I hope you are feeling better today. Maybe we'll chat sometime this weekend. Thinking of you and hope all is well...

Salad is pretty much a constant no-no for me these days...love it, but it sure don't love me! LOL
Other foods seem to rotate in and out of my list of "things I can eat since met". Beef has been the one food item that just, for a lack of a nicer word, gags me. I can't eat it anymore.
Sometimes just the smell of a something will turn my stomache...however, chicken has been the one constant I can eat. In fact, I was craving BBQ chicken earlier (maybe I'll make some!).
I've had adversions to just about every type of food there is (except chocolate of course :roll. At the moment I am hating eggs....any type. The past few weeks I couldnt get enough of them and was eating way way too many.
I have the cravings too...but only for the nice things I really shouldnt be eating! lol
