Food sensitivities/allergies disappear in pregnancy?
I am very gluten sensitive (I have an Uncle with Celiac's Disease) and pretty lactose intolerant as well.
But suddenly, gluten isn't doing me in the way it used to. In fact, I am finding it comforting......pizza, bread, wheat pasta (I usually use corn).....none of it is bothering me nearly as much as it used to!
In fact right now I am comforting myself with a big bowl of Kraft Dinner (mac n cheese in the states)!!
Has anyone else had these changes in food sensitivities??
This is my 4th pregnancy, and it was really my first pregnancy that did the most changes, but after every pregnancy my allergies changed. Some added and some left. It was usually after the pregnancy that I noticed, but that was because I was too scared to attempt to eat things I was allergic too. A few that never left after my first pregnancy are my nut allergies and a few seasonal. Everything else has changed.... Pregnancy does lots of things to your immune system. Sometimes for the better!

I wasn't allergic to anything, but I have terrible sensitivities to wheat. During my pregnancy, it all went away, but it did come back about three months after my son was born. I always said I would love to be perpetually four months pregnant -- no weight gain yet, morning sickness over, no periods, and I can eat anything I want.

I have a friend with celiac disease and her doctor always jokes with her that it would help if she got pregnant because it is common for pg women to have temporary relief from the symptoms of celiac disease.

I've been enjoying stuffing my face with whatever glutenous product I can find (when I am not super m/s nauseated). To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
I don't want to freak you out but if you are confirmed celiac you should not eat gluten during pregnancy. It has been linked to high rates of miscarriage and stillbirth in women with celiac. If you stick to gluten free your chance of m/c is about the same as the regular popluation. For more info just Google it.

Yeah you did scare me, but good to know! I looked up gluten sensitivity and m/c.

I shouldn't get used to enjoying the yum life that I adored for many years before the docs figured out it was what was causing my bowel issues.
I get chest pains when I eat gluten when I'm not pregnant, but not when I am. I am still avoiding it because I haven't gotten tested for celiac.

Sorry to scare you but glad that you read the info. I am gluten free due to my recurrent miscarriages and so far so good, so I'm hoping that it will help me get through this pregnancy.

I am highly allergic to corn and I never tested the waters while pregnant with DS. However, this time we were at a mexican restaurant with friends and I wasn't paying attention and DS plopped a tortilla chip in my mouth (he likes to feed people) and I didn't have any reaction. I was shocked. Totally ready to pop in the epipen, but gave it 15 minutes and nothing. I haven't been daring enough to try it again though.

I have a gluten intolerance that causes me to break out into an itchy rash/hive on my knees and elbows called dermatitis herpteformis. Its different from celiacs and can easily be controlled by daily medication, but the meds can't be taken during pregnancy.
I was really concerned about that when I first got pregnant. My doc pulled me off of my meds and gave me a topical steriod cream and sent me to a dietician. Turns out pregnancy seems to have made the intolerance go away. I still have a small, very minor breakout every now and then (like 1-2x per month), but nothing like the unbearable constant rash I had before pregnancy if I forgot my meds or before I was diagnosed (sp?).
I joke with my dh that its so nice that I may just stay pregnant forever!
