Hello! My name is Danielle. I'm 22 years old and have been struggling with PCOS for quite a while now. My GYN never really diagnosed me until I went in with a list of symptoms and said, "I think I have this" and she told me yea. Great work eh? Maybe I should be giving out the bills.
Anyway, I'm decently thin, 5'7" 150 (could shed some pounds still) and all my fat is on my belly, which I know is extremely common with PCOS. I've cut out a lot of the bad: soda, fast food, even red meat and pork. I have significantly limited my amounts of bread, pasta, wheat, potatoes, carrots, corn etc.
I'm just wondering if there are any foods that people have noticed that once they stopped eating them, they started to lose weight? I currently go to the gym and run a mile+ one-three times a week (depending on my work and school schedule). I'm just super depressed over my tummy and also I have severe acne which i've had since I was 12. It comes and goes but I usually have at least 2 pimples on my face.
I'm hoping someone can give me some hope to shedding the blemishes and belly fat because I'm about to give up.
Oh yea and also, I have NO insurance or much money so drugs aren't on my list right now unfortunately. Hopefully soon.
I totally feel your pain... I am 5'7" - 142. I carry ALL my extra weight in my stomach. I go to the gym 4-5 nights a week - elliptical for 40 mins each night.
It makes jeans shopping so frustrating - my waist is a size bigger then the rest of my body size... ugh
I tried fish oil for about 3 weeks. It did nothing for my weight - and gave me nothing but GI issues.
As for me... currently my skin has never been better. When I was using Proactive my skin was an absolute nightmare... terrible acne. Proactive severly worsened the problem. So I switched to the clinique system - same results. I was over-cleansing it.
I now only use Aveeno once a day, before bed to clear off makeup. Followed by Oil of olay moisturizer. I just rinse with water in the morning and moisturize again. I haven't had a breakout in years.

Thats kind of similiar to me. I tried like everything I could buy for my acne. Proactiv worked for a little while then my face went south BAD. It just got ridiculously oily and pissed off. Maybe I'll try the aveeno. What kind? Just daily cleanser?
The hardest part of PCOS is the diet for me, because I have 2 other mouths to feed, not only is it expensive to cater just to myself and still feed them, I just don't have the time to do it. I did a little research on the South Beach Diet, and altered my cooking habits. I buy the lean meats, and either grill them or broil them, so that the majority of remaining fat is drained off. If I make a dish with hamburger, I brown it and rinse it in extremely hot water. Pastas and breads are whole grain. And we eat lots of wraps. My lunch usually consists of veggies from a bagged salad mix on a wrap, low fat cheese, and low fat ham or turkey on a wrap, with a little low fat ranch dressing. If I splurge, it's at Subway. In between snacks are always either fresh fruit, or one of those 100 calorie packaged snacks. My dh thought that I was being neurotic until he stepped on a scale and saw that he had lost 5 lbs in a month. I lost 30 lbs in two months.
As far as working out, I hate it. So my exercise consisted of doing 30 crunches on my ab lounger 3 times a week and walking with dh for 2 to 3 miles 3 to 4 times per week.
I don't think that I would've lost a any weight had it not been for the Met. Since you have no insurance, maybe you could look on the Alternative Remedies board to look for some OTC ideas.

I definitely will. But, GOOD NEWS!! I got a full-time job that I start tomorrow and I'll get benefits after 90 days. I wish it was like now, but hey after not having it for years I'm super excited.
I also had another question, so is it okay to eat bread as long as its whole grain? I read things saying not to eat it, then that its okay? Also I heard 100% wheat is bad? I'm so confused. I love sandwiches but Idk how to eat them! I've used this lo-carb multi-grain pita bread, its only 75 calories for 3 PIECES! AMAZING!!
Also, I read that carrots, peas, corn etc are bad because they are starchy. Is it really beneficial to stop eating them pretty much completely?

I think that's something you'll have to figure out for yourself. Me, personally, I eat bread and pasta and all that stuff and all veggies and am fine, but I TRY to make most of my starches/carbs good ones--the whole grain varieties (although I LOVE sourdough bread!). And I don't eat as much corn or potatoes or some of the starchier veggies as often or in as big quantities as I would say, spinach, but I still eat it. i'm a moderation girl But I also don't think I am IR or anything, so i'm sure that affects how things are processed in my body. Some people seem to be able to handle eating 'regularly' while others have to make more of a diet shift to help them. Maybe you could try cutting out various items from your diet and see if it helps.
I also wanted to add--I've never really had much of a belly, maybe just a little pooch that no one really noticed but me...anyways, the only way that I got rid of it was by doing core exercise classes--kind of a combo of pilated and yoga--strengthening the core muscles. It was amazing how well it worked.

i think i relate to many of you...i am 5'7 and my weight fluctuates somewhere between 140 and 145lb...i do have a problem around the waist and it increased after my c-section...all this i could cope with until i discovered yest that i was IR. i guess somewhere deep i knew i had it, but i had tested myself many times b4 and my blood sugar would always be in range...even when i was pregnant...anyways...i just find it so not fair that i have to live the rest of my life deprived of many foods i love because i am IR and not even slightly overweight...i do exercise...usually between 3 to 5 days a week for 90 min and that has contributed to flattering my shape but it is not flattening anything!!...m not losing weight and my tummy buldge does not move unless i go completely with no food for days on a row...anyways..my gyno said i should not eat any carbs for lunch and only salad for dinner...again...another problem...i have a family to feed so i cant cook 2 meals everyday and i cant go for only salad in the evening i would still be hungry!!...he said he will prescribe met but is still waiting for more test results to decide on that (thyroid....)...has anyone who had IR been able to reverse it? on which diet? should all carbs be really and completely out of range for IR patients? and how long is an IR patient usually put on met? do u have to take it all ur life??? m really sad coz i used to consider myself very healthy but with a case (of PCO) and now i feel like m so close to being diabetic if m not careful...((

I completely understand how you feel! I'm only 22 years old and I'm supposed to stop eating sweets completely? ARE YOU INSANE?! Its bad enough I haven't had kids yet.. or what if I cant because of this?
My moms family is diabetic (but not her) but they're all overweight and eat fast food like everyday. My mom, my dad and me are slim. My parents can eat whatever the hell they want and not gain weight, especially my dad. NOT FAIR!
And I def agree with you, salad won't do ANYTHING for hunger.. even when I put chicken on mine, I'm usually still hungry.
I'm starting to run out of foods to eat for snacks and meals And veggies are soooo expensive now!
Okay so I have Vitex and Saw Palmetto arriving in my mailbox today (i love online discount stores!). So my question is, what is the recommended regimen? How many do you take everyday?
Please let me know. I'm looking forward to clear skin again, if possible
