Question Fortamet vs Metformin

Hey ya'll.....I have been taking Fortamet ER for almost 2 years now and love love love it. Well, I just got new insurance and they will not cover it. They WILL cover Metformin XR....I know it's considered a generic of Fortamet but my question is this....is it identical? I tolerate Fortamet so well, I would hate to start over....anyone know???? We are talking a price difference of $120 a month or $4 a month!!! But if they are 2 different drugs, i will stick with the Fortamet.......

I thought generic and brand drugs were exactly the same substances, just that the brand has/had the patent, and the brand name and often fancier packaging as well - I thought legally the actual substance in the tablet has to be exactly the same....

Yep, identical. I have had both on my Metformin XR prescription, because the chemist was out of the cheaper version, so they gave me the brand name for the same price. You'll be taking exactly the same medication, don't worry.
