Default Freaked out 8 wks Pregnant and my TSH came back at .01!!!

I have been taking Synthroid .50 once a day for my hypothyroidsm. Well today my midwife calls that they got my results back and I need to stop the medecine per the doctor's instructions.

At 8 weeks (on Monday) they checked my levels to see how I was doing since I was pregnant and the TSH came back at .01 - That is freaking me out. The doctors don't seem concerned but I am a bit shaken up. The Free T4 was more in the normal range apparently. I am concerned about possibly having harmed the baby due to having too my synthroid.

Any advice?

I don't think there's cause for concern. I believe it's easier to carry a baby being hyper as opposed to hypo. Your TSH level should increase pretty quickly and I'm sure the baby is just fine.

Prior to the latest bloodwork, when was the last time you had your TSH level checked, do you know what the level was, and how long have you been on Synthroid? I'm thinking that maybe you have Hashimoto's and are swinging from hypo to hyper...which means you could be back on the synthroid at some point. You'll have to have your TSH levels monitored closely, so if your doctor doesn't schedule you for more b/w, ask what's up.

Congrats on your pregnancy and try not to worry.

Thank you. I am going to call today and have them send me to an endo or I will find one. I don't feel comfortable totally stopping the synthroid. Apparently sometimes in early pregnancy the TSH is not the most trustable indicator of how your thyroid is doing. Apparently my FreeT4 was pretty much normal so I want to make sure that someone checks everything and gets a complete picture. Anyway thanks for your feedback.

My last check was 3 months ago and my TSH was 1.07 so that was normal. I take .50 of syntrhoid everyday.

Yeayee I got an appointment with a great endo here in Dallas. They ussually have a long long wait for new patients but I explained my situation and they got me in with the nurse practicioner who is also fabulous. I am hoping she and the doctor will be able to shed some light on all of this.

Apparently the preference is to be hyper rather than hypo when you're pregnant. Additionally, T4 is often elevated in pregnancy even when everything else is normal. My endo and my perinatologist and my OB get a copy of my thyroid labs ever six weeks right now, and my TSH was .9something at my last draw, but my T4 was elevated, and no one has raised an eye.

http://www.thyroid.org/patients/pati...pregnancy.html has a chart that tells you where various thyroid hormone levels should be during pregnancy. You'll see there that it suggests that total T4 should be elevated throughout pregnancy.

Thank you Erika!

By the way I went to see an endo who reduced my dose to .25 from .50 becasue I did have one episode of fast heart beat and I feel great now.
I go back on Nov. 30th to check my levels again.

I am so much more at peace with this now

You're welcome. I'm so glad that I found that chart, or I'd have worried too, when I saw my T4 creeping up but my TSH falling or remaining stable.

Your OB may want to do more frequent monitoring of the baby's growth, or have you see a perinatologist if you're not already. Thyroid issues that aren't well controlled can (but don't always) cause IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) and some doctors feel "better safe than sorry" when they have pregnant thyroid patients. Personally, while I'm fond of my OB, I could do without the perinatology visits as well-I don't care for the doctor...the only good part is that they do ultrasounds at every visit.
