Frustrated and confused For the past three years, my gyn has insisted that I do not have PCOS and that my irregular cycles/infertility are caused by low body weight. (My androgens and fasting glucose are well within the normal range, though I do have polycystic ovaries.) I gained about five pounds as she suggested and still was unable to conceive, though I started having slightly more regular cycles (every 35-40 days). Finally, a test showed an elevated LH level, and my doctor conceded that I might have a 'mild' case of PCOS. She prescribed Clomid, and though I've ovulated each of the four cycles as confirmed by progesterone tests, I've still not conceived.
I'm now seeing a fertility specialist, and he says that I likely do have PCOS because women whose problems are caused by low body weight or excessive exercise don't respond to Clomid; however, I have to return for further tests in a few days to confirm the diagnosis. Following this round of tests, he wants me to have my fallopian tubes checked and then start on IUI.
I really don't want to go through all of the emotional stress if IUI is unlikely to work. I'd much rather skip to IVF. What fertility treatments has anyone else had? Is it possible that the doctor is wrong and that I don't have PCOS? How is it that I don't have any symptoms apart from irregular periods? Could I have insulin resistance even if my fasting glucose and modified GTT glucose levels were normal? Admittedly, I do experience frequent bouts of low blood sugar. I already eat a very healthy diet (whole grains, beans, fish and lots of veggies) -- but do I need to eat more protein and cut the carbs even if they are whole grain? Sorry for the slew of questions, but I'm so frustrated, as it seems lean PCOS is even worse since we can't just make dietary changes!! Any advice or reassurance would be greatly appreciated!! |
