Abbi Strauss of Metairie battles a variety of psychological and physical ailments, including severe depression and agoraphobia, social anxiety, polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid disease, sleep apnea and asthma.
She is also morbidly obese.
Strauss is hoping to have gastric bypass surgery but her insurance doesn't cover the cost of the procedure, estimated to be about $25,000. So, family and friends are planning a fund-raiser for her May 31 from 7 to 11 p.m. at Congregation Gates of Prayer, 4000 West Esplanade Ave., Metairie.
A donation of $50 per person includes food and other refreshments, raffles, auctions and live entertainment by Limited Edition. Some of the members of the New Orleans Saints may attend.
A portion of the proceeds also will go to the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association. The medical disorder is characterized by changes to the ovaries resulting in irregular or no menstrual cycle, excess body hair growth, occasionally baldness, and often obesity, diabetes and hypertension.
For tickets or information, call Strauss at 837-9935 or Nina Strauss at 456-0429.
