My husband and I did do a fundraiser for our adoption. We are currently finishing our homestudy and waiting to be matched with a birthmother. We did something a little different. We held a dinner and auction to help raise the funds. We sent a letter out to all of our friends and family asking if they would be willing to donate anything we could use for the auction. Most of the items donated were things in really good condition people would be taking to goodwill. We also asked local businesses to donate gift cards to help with the costs of the dinner, smaller businesses were willing, and we asked restaurants we go to frequently if they would be willing to donate gift cards, and our family/friends did the same. We found a park location to hold the event that we did not have to pay for. We found some people were really opposed to the idea of us doing a fundraiser, and others were really supportive. We were able to educate people we know about adoption and the costs involved. I think anyone who felt like they would have been "helping pay for our baby" did not attend the event. Another benefit of holding the fundraiser is that everyone now knows we are looking for a birthmother, and many people are trying to help us find our birthmother. Anything left over from the auction we had a yard sale with, but that only brought about $400 dollars. I am really happy we listened to suggestions and did the auction as our main fundraiser instead of a yard sale, as we did quite a bit better on the auction and everyone who came thanked us for inviting them and are still telling us what a good time they had.
