Is there anyone here that has medicare and has gotten gastric bypass covered by it? I am really interested in talking to my doctor about it, but I want to knowmore about the medicare chunk of things. What do I need to do before medicare will pay for gastric bypass surgery? all help is greatly appreciated!
I'm not in the US, so can't answer your question, but have you looked on ~*~WLS Divas~*~March 2008~*~Happy Easter!~*~
Lots of ladies who have had different types of WLS and are very helpful and supportive
Good luck

I do know someone that got medicaid to pay for her GBS. She was a large woman - over 400# and dealing with a lot of health problems including sleep apnea and out of control diabetes. I remember she told me that she was going to have to pay the first $1200 of the surgery and she was very discouraged because her family is very poor and she didn't have the money. Her drs office called her one day and told her they were waiving her portion of the bill! This was in Ohio.
I don't know how you go about it but I know it is possible.
I agree with Briggy - join us on the WLS Divas thread. As far as getting approved...call Medicare directly and see if they cover it and if so ask them what needs to be done to get approval. Good luck!

My aunt is 5 feet tall and weighed over 330 lbs. She was on medicare and they paid for her gastric bypass. She's lost well over a hundred pounds and is doing great. She was on disability for two years before she could get medicare and then she had to go to a medicare approved doctor to have the procedure done. Best of luck to you!

Hi there. Im disabled on Medicare. I have been told by my clinic in WA STATE, that Medicare is paying for gastric bypass. They arent dening people anymore. Supposely they feel paying for this will decrease the individuals drain on the medicare system. The APPROVEing problem is going to relatively easy. I have made it pretty easy. I have documented proof of my health issues, so I dont anticipate a problem I am going to my intitial consult on 4/14. I should have a date, shortly after. Goodluck and pm me if you want more info.

I know here in Florida they will pay for Lapband, no approval needed, but if you need GBS then you have to get approval but I dont think many people get denied.
Hmmm...Im not sure about where you live but, here in LA. they will cover it but, you have to have major health problems.
