Default General Questions!

Ok so I have been diagnosed with PCOS during the summer and I have an appointment coming up in 10 days time with a specialist. Up until now the only info I have gotten about PCOS is off the internet so I want to clear a few things up before I see the doc!

My symptons are;
Obesity (I am trying and have tried several times to lose weight but with no success!)
Irregular periods
Acne
Mood swings and depression
and some other weird and not so wonderful things!

Question #1; Are there any natural/herbal alternatives to the pill and metformin?
#2: Does metformin really give you the runs?!!
#3: What foods should I avoid?

I'll post more questions as I think of them!!

Thank you
Ciara-Marie

(Sorry about all the spelling!!)

I can tell you that Metformin does have some pretty nasty side effects and the runs is one of them. However, it usually does get somewhat better after getting used to it. I also found that the less starch and sugar I eat, the less the Metformin affects me adversely!

Good luck!

Metformin was not that bad for me. They wanted to put me on 1500mg a day of Met, which is 3 pills a day. I started with one pill everyday for a week. Then two pills everyday for a week. Then got up to 3 pills and have been on it for 10 months now. I never had bathroom issues, but I was having nausea everyday for the first month. Then, one day the nausea just stopped coming and has never come back! I never threw up or had to call in sick, it was just an annoying nausea feeling. Everyone is different.

Hi Ciara-Marie
Those symptoms sound like oestrogen dominance symptoms to me. You should get yourself tested for oestrogen and progesterone levels - although you will be hard pushed to find a doctor that will test you. If you can afford private testing that would be what I suggest to you. Your profile doesn't say where in the world you are, if you are UK or Europe - check out Bio-Vitality(.com), if you are anywhere else, you can either wait for Bio-Vitality to come online with US dollars (some time in the next month) or you could do a google search on Saliva Testing to see where else can do it. Bio-Vitality also does a more comprehnsive test that is particularly for PCOS. In the results is also a natural protocol that you can follow if you want to.
Good luck with what ever you try, and if you want to know more about private testing or following a natural route please don't hesitate to message me!
